Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
A win tomorrow does a fucking insane amount for how Baker is viewed league wide. Catapults him into elite QB talk imo if he takes down the champs.

Win or loss, he should be there already.

When I say "elite talk" I mean in the same breath as Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, who some people claim are elite.

I don't mean Aaron Rodgers's level.

Obviously not Rodgers level.

But league wide there are still many mixed feelings about Mayfield.

It’s considered a supremely hot take amongst NFL fans to prefer Baker over Lamar

So many NFL fans are linear first order thinkers

Doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to figure out how much better Baker is long term

Lamar is only better at filling his diapers

The Bills' defensive strategy worked pretty much to perfection. Prioritize containment over getting sacks, and force Lamar to throw from the pocket rather than on the move. Then start mixing in more straight pressure as the game tensed up in the second half to get some sacks. It's a formula that will work often enough to keep him from making deep playoff runs.

Baker is good enough from within the pocket that he'll kill you if you give him the amount of time you can freely give Lamar.

Unless it’s a win because the ground game dominates.

Nah.

If the Browns win today, even if they run for 300 yards, the narrative is going to be EXTREMELY positive for Mayfield. Going into Arrowhead and beating Patrick Mahomes? C'mon.

Fair or unfair, the media has an obsession with heaping too much praise for wins and pinning too much blame for losses on the quarterback.

Which is crazy, because if they just excused 2.5 years of mediocre or generally sub par QB play behind poor excuses, there wouldn’t be such feelings and overall objectivity that goes into assessing his play.

Kidding aside, individual wins don’t mean shit, even less so when you’re trying to force individual praise for a team accomplishment.

Consistency dispels narratives, nothing else.

If he wins this week, then next week, but turns back into a pumpkin in 2021, he’s no longer elite.

Being considered “elite” is a moment in time. In a league where that can change game to game, the only thing this presents is an opportunity for your TEAM to reach greatness.

Much like Flacco that one year.

Unfortunately, the same applies in the event of a loss. And...it's even possible that we lose because Baker had a bad game. Doesn't mean he isn't a great QB -- just would make him a great QB who had a bad game.

I think it’s clear Stefanski has really worked with Baker to create an offense that lets him shine. I still think Baker’s biggest strength is intangible: he seems to be a great leader and his teammates trust him to do what it takes to win.

The footwork improvements mid-season, to me, have just been massive at making Baker very consistent.

Its been refreshing to say the least. He’s always going to be a frustrating player, IMO.

But when you have Stefanski and company getting him into this rhythm, and Baker doing the most he can with it, that’s the consistency by which a QB can become elite.

Baker is definitely still growing, which makes it even more exciting. You know this offense and what it’s capable of at it’s best are only getting started.

Bakers first year in the system. Looks like consistency coaching wise will finally be there. Not unrealistic to expect him to further progress next year.

He’s an ascending stock. Regardless of whether we win or lose today.

Very proud of Baker. I know people are super down on our points scored, but really it should have been 7 more and both teams had long loooong drives that gutted the clock

He’s the guy. And he’s a guy that can every bit go on a hot streak and win you games himself. And we will need that at some point.

He faced adversity this year. There were browns fans unironically calling for Keenum to “see what we have”. And honestly baker started the year poorly. And he fought back and played like one of the NFL’s bests

0 complaints on Baker. Well, 1. Work on your fucking sneaks my man ;)
