Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Baker is the type to bet on himself

The only way we get him early is if we pay him like the best QB in the NFL a year earlier imo

He’s not a risk averse dude and honestly nor should he be

Outside of a MVP super bowl year next year, he wont end up with a Mahommes type contract, but if he has a good year next year, he will end up a top 3 contract, i would take a chance and make him Goff or Rodgers type money making him 5th or 6th. That would be 33.5 million a year. Even with Covid, it might be worth it giving him some higher guarantee money, if not, we are steering at #2 money at 40 mill a year, which if i know, he knows, but we have got to give to get, and paying him early and raising the guarantee is our giving.

But if i had to bet, nothing gets done this summer as Baker waits for the even bigger payday.

I have faith in Berry to figure it out.

He knows the kind of personality Baker has...i’m sure he can structure the contract in a way that Baker would have to think really hard about turning it down.

Why are we in a rush to extend baker? He’s not a FA for 2 more years.

Assuming he continues to play well, the sooner then Browns sign him, the cheaper his contract extension will be basically.

But it’s likely Baker who is the one who prefers to wait anyway.

His contract extension wouldn’t kick in until 2023 regardless unless the Browns try and replace his 2022 option season with something cheaper, but I doubt Baker would go for that.

Baker tied Brian Sipes' TDs in a season record (30) yesterday. Granted it took a few extra games but it's still nice to see.

He's the guy. I just hope he stays as motivated this off-season as he did in last years. My gut says he comes back even better.

I'm honestly having the conversation already with Baker "Hey, no rush. I just want to put our cards on the table. You're our guy. Contract-wise, you can basically write your own check and Jimmy's gonna cash it. I just want to make sure you understand that whatever money we pay you, that's money we can't pay other positions. So, if you want this conversation to be handled by your agent, I get it. But at any point over the next two years, if you want, I'm here to talk. The door's always open."

There might be some inclination on Baker's part to show that he's here for the long run.

Yeah, it would actually be really beneficial to the Browns if he were willing to sign, even for top 5 money right now.

Maybe that sounds insane to some but the QB market just resets so quickly. And if Baker waits 2 years, it is sure to cost the Browns a hell of a lot more money.

It isn't without risk but if we think we could sign him at 32-34 on an extension, you do it in a heartbeat. That same level of contract in 2 seasons may be 37-40 (or more), as all of these other young guys hit their extension windows.
