Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm no football expert, so feel free to correct, but watching highlights from last year I noticed this line is amazing and let's baker look really good. Gives him so much time and protection. Baker didn't seem to want to or be able to make throws to his reads and would improvise improvise out of the pocket when guys break open and are easier throws.

Our line provides that, but struggled against KC a top team, with a big, strong, fast defense that the line will struggle with taking away his ability to wait around for guys to get open because the pocket collapses so much quicker. I'm a baker fan, but we have enough talent to win the super bowl, and talent stacked every single position. Hope he takes a leap forward from last year because he has to.

I don't think its a Baker problem at all, to be quite honest. The Browns lacked any ability to get open vs a faster defense and that turned into Baker needing to make extremely tight window throws constantly. It was a big problem for the Browns last year that wasn't talked about enough because they were just so good executing an offense within 30 yards of the line.

Jarvis Landry was awful against the Chiefs last year, just was absolutely shut down by them. Higgins got open a few times but he still really struggled vs speed. They had nothing to counter act the Chiefs saying "Beat us over the top". It's why they went and got Schwartz this year. They badly missed OBJ against the Chiefs as well.. They sorely lacked any sort of deep presence on this team.

Our offensive line wasn't healthy. Jedrick Wills played one play before having to leave the game. Kendall Lamm already was out, so we had to move backup, backup guard Blake Hance to LT. Conklin was playing on one good leg and couldn't do anything in the run game.

Does Berry come to Baker and his agent and state contact terms and point out examples of guys that would have to be cut to accommodate that salary level? Like, "We could get you $X a year, but to do that, we would have to release OBJ."

That...... seems like a dangerous game.... Maybe start with Teller. :chuckle:

I’d imagine Baker stays out of negotiations and leaves that to his agent, so he won’t have to entertain those arguments to begin with.

That's the sort of power play a dummy would make that blows up in your face. The agent/Baker instantly go "No, you could just do x instead" and that falls apart--it shows that you're attempting to manipulate the person you're negotiating with and negotiations fall apart.

I'm guessing Berry brings examples to the table of the way rosters were built around QBs who took max money and the way rosters were built around QBs who took a discount. Don't make it specifically about one player today--show them the way you have to gut a roster to fit that massive QB contract. Show them the way the Patriots won around Brady taking less money. Show them the way even the greatest QBs the league has seen have all renegotiated to take less money later on in their contracts because they regretted the impact the salary had on the rest of the team.

You bring the evidence and let them connect the dots to what it means for this specific siituation.

I doubt it. Agents are not stupid, they know it comes at a cost, they also know starting caliber qb's in 2022 get paid 40 mill a year. Honestly anything under 40 million a year would be a discount. I am hoping we can squeeze it just under and with more guaranteed, but i doubt it.

The guy fucking lives at First Energy Field. That has to fit into his compensation package somehow.
