Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
ESPN must've heard us. A Baker body story: 'It takes a village': How Browns QB Baker Mayfield remade his body after a disastrous 2019

Something I noticed this week:

The 44-yard deep shot to Schwartz, his footwork is elite. Bounces into the throw, twisting his body while looking off the safety.

Timing was perfect, that is highefficiency quarterback play.

Additionally, the Browns are CLEARLY using Schwartz in a similar manner to how the Chiefs use Hill to extend the field.

Schwartz can take the top off a defense, how much do you want to bet they’ll set up the tight end underneath that route in a later this year.

In this second clip, Baker clearly reading the CB off play action. The CB bails back to take the top level defender, leaving Bryant WIDE open for a high probability catch and run.

Seeing the defense at the snap, making the right read, making good and fundamentally sound throws.

MVP performance from Baker.

If you can set up defenses to respect Schwartz, People’s-Jones & OBJ over the top, those middle levels become more open to the tight ends and Jarvis.

Also means a lot getting the defense out of position for the run and screen game, given how much is coming out of the run action/misdirection.

Stefanski calling plays at a high level, with an offensive line who can execute when healthy.

Sucks to see Jed, Conklin, Hubbard and others dinged up. The biggest advantage the Browns have moving forward is their offensive flexibility to come at you from all levels like this.

the growth and maturity is night and day from just 2 years ago

We need some new football cliches, the following are just not cutting it anymore —

“do your job”

“learn from mistakes”

“look at the film”

“be more efficient”

I need more creativity or press conferneces will continue to be boring.

MVP performance from Baker.

Baker played a great 50 minutes, I'll give you that, but if Baker had an MVP performance, what did Mahomes have?

It's interesting to take another close look at Mahomes' 75yd TD pass to Hill. In the rush to anoint Mahomes in the broadcast and subsequently it's actually been lost that it was a completely dreadful pass which, rather than spiralling towards its target just floated high, short and hapless like the lamest duck you'll see all season. It didn't even go end-over-end like a punt but rotated around the ball's longitudinal axis like the funkiest onside kick anyone could ever produce by design. Probably the only way it could have been completed but something a deep safety will probably never encounter again in a whole career. On the other side Baker's intended heave out-of-bounds lands exactly in the numbers of the KC DB. Talk about fluke-magins.

Yeah. I was impressed with Mahomes (hommes) ability to avoid pressure and get rid of the ball on that play. I was also impressed with Johnsons coverage on Hill. The pass was short and off target and Johnson didn't find the ball in the air. He kept his body on Hill and Hill adjusted to the shit pass.

Interesting excerpt here from an article ($) by Jeff Howe on The Athletic this morning. First I've seen that Mayfield and his camp prefer the idea of a short term extension:

Mayfield isn’t necessarily trying to reset the market. While Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million pact and Allen landed a six-year, $258 million deal, Mayfield seems to prefer something shorter, perhaps four years on top of his fifth-year option in 2022. That would put him in position to negotiate his next deal in his early 30s when he’d still be in the prime of his career.

Mayfield has not expressed his desired financial terms to the Browns, as they could change based on the timing of the negotiations. On the other side, it’s too early to know how much the Browns would be willing to pay, as they’re still eying Mayfield’s performance.

Mahomes is the GOAT.

He’s getting to that LeBron point of his career, where other people receive the MVP award in spite of him being the best player in the league.

I know Baker says he was trying to throw it out of bounds. Maybe I should believe him, it's just that forcing that pass is what old Baker would have done. I saw it and just assumed he fell back into a bad habit when the pressure of the game got heavy. Maybe he didn't.

While you are right when you say Mahomes got lucky on that pass to Hill, it's hard for me to call it luck when Mahomes gets lucky so often. It's the cheat codes!!!

Anyway, here's some nice optimistic Mayfield articles:

Mayfield was as technically sound as one can be, throwing with poise and the proper footwork. CBS commentator Tony Romo marveled at how "quiet" Mayfield's feet were, saying that he consistently put himself in good positions with his footwork.
....
The pass came up short, but it wasn't a poor decision. Mayfield will continue this strong play as the season goes on, and in a different scenario where he gets tackled one second later, we are singing his praises today. It appears we may have to wait a few weeks instead until everyone catches on.

Is Mayfield good enough for the Browns to overtake the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs in the AFC? The answer was “yes” for much of the game in Kansas City as the Browns led for 75 percent of all plays, compared to 14 percent for the Chiefs. Yet, those watching the Chiefs intercept Mayfield on the Browns’ final drive to secure a 33-29 Kansas City victory might instinctively mark that ending against Mayfield on the is-he-good-enough ledger.
The myth of the miraculous game-winning quarterback drive says that would be a mistake. No one succeeds regularly where Mayfield and the Browns failed in the late going Sunday.
Baker Mayfield looked around the visiting locker room Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium and thought the Browns needed to snap out of it.
Turns out the quarterback read his teammates properly, and his speech was needed after the Browns suffered a 33-29 season-opening loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, who had ousted Cleveland from the playoffs eight months earlier in the divisional round.

I don't understand the people who decide what happened contrary to what the QB said. Baker said he was trying to throw the ball out of bounds. Tony Romo said it on the broadcast.

If Baker was trying to force it I don't doubt he would have said, "I tried to force it, I need to get better in that area." It's just kinda weird to me to be like, "No ur lying u werent trying to throw it away u were forcing it!!1"

Ears hear one thing but my eyes saw another. I got shit for football eyes, so feel free to ignore me, but it's hard not to see something once you think you see it.

4 years seems more like a typical extention. If he signs it before next year, that means he's under contract for 5 years.

SHort compared to Mahommes, but that's more of an outlier.
