Beer snob thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Don’t forget Magic City. Their NEIPA’s are right up there with the best of them. Space Snakes may have been one of the best NEIPA’s I had all year.

I hadn't heard of them before, but I'll definitely be stopping by. Thanks for the suggestion.

I picked up food this weekend from Taco Tonto's in Kent and grabbed a "Mama Needs Her Fruitpunch" IPA from Hoof Hearted. You'd think it would be a fruity beer, but it was a fluffy NEIPA. Highly recommend.

Got my brother in law a couple of beers for his birthday (mostly because he shares).

The Bruery - So happens its Tuesday (SHIT)- my fucking god. sweet jesus. Dark rich, thick, delicious. its 15%. You definitely get the 15% on the back end with just a little burn. Its in the top 5 beers ive ever had. if you ever get a chance to buy this DO IT and save it. save it for a special occasion. If there is a perfect dark beer this is 99% of the way there.

Abraxas- So i know its higher ranked than the one above, and is routinely a top 100 beer, and its good. its excellent. Some heat, but doestn even approach hot. "The bit of spice that makes existance extra nice". Its definitely in my top 10 beers of all time, but its just not quite as full when it comes to SHIT.

Heh... my brother lives in DC and his friend is in the club at The Bruery (routinely spends close to 10K a year at the place.. the dude has a problem). So, I went in on some of their limited release Black Tuesday stuff, as well as some other randoms that sounded good. In December, here was my list of stouts from The Bruery:

You Want a Piece of Me?
So Happens It's Tuesday
Black Tuesday Maple Syrup Barrel-Aged
Sweet Magnolias
Three's Cocompany
Love at Midnight
Liberty Stoutwich
Black Tuesday Port Barrel-Aged
Vermont Sticky Maple
Black Tuesday Vanilla Barrel-Aged
Bakery: Boysenberry Pie Double Pastry Stout
The Baker's Russian Pastry Stout
Grey Monday

I had a great month... also I was trying to go through my beer stash so I could go dry in 2021.

I personally liked the Liberty Stoutwich variant of Black Tuesday the most. Most people liked Sweet Magnolias the most (Vanilla and Banana), but I'm not a banana fan. It was still delicious.

If you like SHIT, try to get your hands on any of the others. I think they release box sets twice a year, that contain 12 bottles of special Black Tuesday releases like contest winners and stuff.

I also prefer the Bruery stouts to Abraxas, mostly on mouthfeel. To me, the Bruery is deeper, richer and creamier in the mouth, whereas Abraxas is a little sharper with the carbonation which leads to a thinner mouthfeel. But now we're getting really snobby and splitting hairs.

Blue Door and Catalina's in Columbus are two of the best breakfast places I've ever been to.

I've been meaning to check out Crooked Pecker. Do they have a go to style, or a specific beer that I should try to get from them?

Masthead is such a cool spot. I grabbed some of their Jalopeno IPA early on in quarantine and loved it. It would have been so easy to overdo a beer like that, but the spice and jalopeno flavor were perfectly subtle. Great pizza too.

Was in Cleveland yesterday for the Masthead anniversary party, which was amazingly well done, and all the beers (except Juggerhop) were fantastic. There are leftovers from yesterday all on tap still so if any of you locals are trying to go somewhere to watch these games today that would be my recommendation.

Noble Beast is another great spot as they’re a mile down the road from Masthead. They didnt have anything otherworldly on draft but their food is probably the best for any craft brewery or bar in Cleveland. Masthead included. It was SO good, and very reasonably priced too.

I preordered a couple 4pks from Crooked Pecker and went there for the first time yesterday as well to pick them up. They do NEIPAs really well, it’s mainly what they’re known for. Had a few stouts from them in the past and they’re ok but nothing special. Unfortunately, due to how tiny their taproom is they’re not open due to covid. Just cans to go.

Wanted to hit Missing Mountain and Magic City as I’ve never been to either but all the beers I’ve had from both of them have been solid. They just weren’t close enough to everything else and there were only so many hours in the day before having to make the trek back to Toledo. Mountain is not open for anything other than beers to go, similar to Pecker. I do believe Magic City is open though.

Really can’t wait until life is normal again. I miss the days of hopping around to all these breweries during the day, capping the night with going to a Cavs or Indians game, and staying downtown for the night.

Pliny the Younger is about to get it's release, but because they had to cut production in half, it's only available in the extremely limited release Russian River Brewing Company mixed 12 packs.

Damn bastards.

Any chance you want to pick one up, pass on enjoying it yourself, and ship it across the country for me? :fnd (2):

Any homebrewers in this thread? I've done a few small, 1 gallon batches on my stovetop. It can be tricky working with such a small batch, but it's a fun way to experiment with making your favorite styles and it's really satisfying seeing positive results after tweaking your process. Happy to start a new thread, if that would be more appropriate.

Haven't checked this thread in months, but looks like I missed on some good conversation a few weeks ago.

I just got into homebrewing. My girlfriend got me a homebrew kit for Christmas, a Northern Brewer 5 gallon starter kit to make their amber ale. We just bottled on Saturday, so going to let the bottles sit about 2 weeks for priming. I had a great time and thought it was very insightful - gives me a whole new appreciation for the brewing process, and I didn't even make anything complicated. I have bought a few books and a smaller 1 gallon fermenter so I can start making small batches every few weeks. I've been watching YouTube videos like crazy and reading brewing blogs so I can learn more. We are living in a small apartment right now, so all-grain brewing is next to impossible. I'll be sticking with extract for a while, but I'm still excited about this new hobby.

ive been doing it on and off for about 8 years. All of it it is through kits and 5 gallon batches. Ive wanted to go all grain and make my own, but never got up the the energy.

My favorite styles of beer to drink are darker beers, but Ive always found German style beers the easiest to consistently make and be good. :chuckle:

have you done all grain?

I'd like to do a 5 gallon batch next. The 1 gallon stove top kits have been a great, inexpensive way to learn, but it's disappointing to only have 6-8 beers when you make something good.

I haven't done all grain yet either. Maybe after a few 5 gallon extract brews that would be the next step for me.

Nice! Northern Brewer is where I've gotten most of my 1 gallon kits. I've found that after priming let the bottles sit for longer than the 2 weeks that they specify. 3-4 would be better. After only 2 weeks my beers usually have a thin, almost "cidery" feel to them. Going longer seems to really help carbonate the beers and the mouth feel really improves.

Craft a Brew has some kits that I want to try next. I really want to try my hand at a NEIPA after having some success with traditional west coast varieties.
