7-14-06, 3:30 a.m. The Bengals’ torturous offseason had its most heavily scrutinized day Thursday. Not only did news break that middle linebacker Odell Thurman is lost for the first four games of the season because of a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, but they added another player with character questions to the linebacker corps when they selected University of Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks in the third round of the supplemental draft. The Bengals wouldn’t comment on the Thurman story, although they clearly prepared for the possibility when they put Brian Simmons at middle linebacker for the first time since 2002.

Haha very welcoming optimism from the Bengals Webmasters :chuckles: Better hope he doesn't read that go on a bender and knock off a 7-11 or something. This team is hilarious they draft players with absolutely no character.

Nicholson I beleive is suspended for a while because he was charged with burglary right before or after the draft. I think it's hilarious..hopefully Palmer takes his time

to much crap is going on and it will be hard for them to think about football...

bengals can say that it does not destrict them but it really does... u got johnson always saying how great he is, then u got this... also palmers injury...

bangels dont do well then things look great for the browns... cuz mcnair will not play 9 games and bartimore is not good anymore... it will be down to browns and steelers again...

Browns and Steelers again? I hope your referring to the old days, because it hasn't come down to the Browns and Steelers in forever :chuckles:..ughh :uhh:

I dont know man. They just got lucky with Ahmad Brooks.

A 1st Round talent with a 3rd round pic.

I think they struck gold. If it wasn't for his character issues, every team would have jumped on him.

Well, one thing is for sure. The BenGALS are the new Baltimore Ravens.

Chris Henry was a first round talent and look how he's done for them? Token and shooting at shit.

Character is as important as talent to begin with. You can be the most talented person around and waste it all.

Some good examples..

Len Bias
Ricky Williams
Shawn Kemp

All had big time talent but Bias' OD'd, Williams chose Marijuana over the NFL, and Shawn Kemp was a full blown alcoholic.

I'm not saying talent isn't important but your talent level can be anywhere but if your head ain't right your nothing.

Don't they have enough character issues? Honestly..Chris Henry Odell Thurman AJ Nicholson Chad Johnson needs 2 lockers. One for his pads, helmet etc. And one for his ego.

I hear you, but I can do with EGO/Troubles, yet talent is the most important thing. I mean, look at all these good character guys with very little talent. That ain't going to help u win.

Talent with trouble > Little talent with no trouble.

I mean Cincy is going to probably go 2-2 without Thurman. When he comes back, they can go something like 9-3. So Thurman being out would not hurt them as much, but Thurman being there helps them a lot more.

I mean, look at Baltimore. They are....wait, they WERE the Jailhouse of the NFL, and they were able to prevail and win a Super Bowl. Besides Last year, they pretty much always have had a winning season evey year.

Although character is important, it isn't everything. For every "Ricky Williams" type of example u can give me, I can give u 100 benchwarmers with little talent and good character. U need Playmakers to win. And if the coach is good, the headcases can be kept under wraps.

CDT, browns did face steelers and winner did make playoffs few years ago... thats why i said again...

Bengals are smart....if this guy stays on the field, he is going to be an ANIMAL.

I wanted the Browns to get him, but we passed.

Randy Moss had question too, he is going to go down as the best WR ever.

Odell isn't going to be the reason for them not doing good or doing amazing. He isn't that kind of player yet, Moss and TO would be much better if they had better character IMO..

a top guy does not have to go down for the team to be affected...

Key word there buddy... IF

IF Winslow didn't get hurt
IF we would of drafted Donovan McNabb
IF we wouldn't hired Butch Davis :chuckles:

The "new" Browns value character above talent.. They don't care if you were an amazing player in college, character comes first... Builiding a solid foundation on that is a great stepping stone for the future..

We got a steal in Brodeny Pool... If he would of stayed in school, they guy was a Top 15 pick..

I don't think so... Jerry Rice is the best WR in NFL history..

Brodney Pool has yet to impress. Wasted pick.

Rice is the best right now, but Moss by far was the games best WR ever on talent alone. Will he get Rice's stats? Rice played a long, long time on some very good teams. But there isnt a doubt that Moss is the most talented WR that played the game.

There is no IF yet, the guy is playing and until he shows otherwise, he will be a very good NFL LB. A third round pick for a guy that was the best LB in the college game at one point, no brainer.

Odell Thurman is one heck of a linebacker with out him the Browns may beat them in week 2...

The guy has only been the NFL for one year.. How can you say wasted pick? You know Crennel doesn't like to play rookies.. Give him a chance..

You didn't say that... You just plaing stated best ever... Talentwise, he is right up there..

I have yet to see anything about Pool impressing the coaches...there is a lot of concern about our safties outside of Russel, who is just solid. We really need Pool and Jones to produce, they were high picks and saftey is an important position in this defense. I really want him to produce, but at the same time, we could have had a LB at that pick...which we needed more. Thurman would have been nice at that spot.

In my opinion he is, Moss does things at the WR spot that has never been done. Rice was solid and was solid forever. He ran perfect routes and had the luxury of playing with a great great QB a very good defense and a dynasty football team. Moss had Culpepper and that's about it.

Will experts agree with me? Maybe some on talent alone, but not many. But that's just my opinion.
