Billy Preston: Most likely the next LeBron James

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He needs to work on his game close to the rim. He is shooting 47% from 3 but 37% overall. He has the size and length advantage which he will need to learn how to use properly.

He is an odd prospect, most guys that size you wish they had a 3 point shot to pair with everything else they are good at. He seems to have the outside shot but not much of anything else at the moment. At 6'10 he should be able to get rebounds and easy buckets at the rim. I'm not sure where they are playing him but they should give him the bulk of his minutes at PF or Center so he can develop that inside game.

Has he been rebounding poorly? That looked like a strength of his in Summer league.

He has been averaging 4.4 rebounds a game. If he is playing SF that wouldn't be bad but if they are playing him at PF, you would expect that to be higher.

In summer league I thought he had good position and instinct for where to be but he had a hard time securing the rebound. That goes back to using his length and height to his advantage.

I think he is a SF and with his 3 point shot that seems like it will fit long term. From the highlights I've seen though he isn't slashing and finishing. He doesn't seem to have any post game.

Not a good sign. I thought he was a mismatch at the 4, but I don't think he is a 3.

I actually thought he had the advantage at the 3 with his size/length. He seems to have the feet/speed to keep up with SFs. He can handle the ball and play make alittle which is usually something a SF can do.

I thought he have to get alot stronger to be a PF. His inside game would have to take a massive jump to get to what most PFs are at. I think he is a SF that can be a small ball stretch 4 at times.

I'll defer to you because i haven't watched him much. I thought he was too upright to play the 3.

Once again, it goes to show you what the mental part of the game means to everything. Billy isn't without skills but right now, he's falling short on a lot of things.

If I were coaching him, I'd try and simplify things. Go out, run the floor, rebound , defend and just try and improve game by game.

His rebounding numbers aren't great but aren't terrible either as he's averaging about 20 mins per game. From what I can tell he is the backup center for the Charge. This makes his overall FG% look even worse but then again, this can be dependent on the quality of players around him too. Or, maybe he has no post game yet.

Is the Next Lebron James ceiling trajectory still realistic?

yes, maybe better.

I am disappointed in the franchise for not starting him already. He should be our starting sf and pf. He is that good he deserves two starting positions. (insert two way contract joke here)

How has he been playing?

I think he's got a good game, but its heavily ISO oriented. And his post moves are almost always fade aways. If he could get a back to the basket game with fakes and using his pivot foot he'd score more and get to the free throw line. I just think his bread and butter right now is mid range jumpers. It's too bad because he has the handles. I'm not sure on his instincts as I recall he was open for a 3 in the preseason and decided to dribble drive it. It's a good play in a sense but he was slow executing it. Of course I'm being super critical but he will get better at this as he plays more.

This is the best thing for him right now, playing for a G league team. He wouldn't develop as fast if he played for the Cavs.

Remember this guy would be a 1 year vet if he got drafted.

Like others said, this is a short sighted move. What did they expect? lol.

I highly doubt these two guys they signed are going to be immediate help, let alone get alot of playing time with the Cavs. Waive Harrison makes sense but why not put the one of the guys on a 10 day contract and one in Harrison's two way spot.

I figure someone will pick up Preston.

To answer the title thread, No Preston is likely not the next LeBron.

Truth of the matter Preston isn't ready to even contribute at the G League level at this point. He's 2 years away from being 2 years away as they say.

Sadly I remember watching him during his AAU days here in SoCal. He was dripping with potential and had all the measurables too. His mother also transferred him every year to a new school. He was always sitting out games. Then he basically sat out his entire freshman year in college. It's no wonder he hasn't developed at all.

What is with us always picking up these mid-twenties-year-old players, as our two-way players?
At that age, they're close enough to their prime that they probably aren't going to get that much better.
I'd rather swing big and go for someone who is really raw but has more upside, than someone who is clearly an AAAA player.
