The Dedmon trade request could open the door for the Cavs to have conversations with the Kings with a Kevin Love deal.
CLE Receives:
Dewayne Dedmon $13.3m
Bogdan Bogdanovic $8.5m
Harry Giles $2.6m
SAC Recieves:
Kevin Love $28.9m
This trade would give the Cavs $4.5 million in savings in the current year, though would cause them to go over the roster limit... waiving Zizic, or a Brandon Knight buyout would be the likely solution to that issue in my opinion. The $4.5 million cushion also puts them almost $10m away from the luxury tax, giving them more flexibility in taking on a salary dump with Knight's deal if they chose to go that route. Or they could simply not use any other expirings, and the Cavs could take advantage of the Bogdanovic & Giles cap holds and still have over $20 million in cap space this summer to work with after adding a top draft pick to the books.
The reason I think this deal could be possible is that the Cavs could have a ton of leverage over Sacramento with the impending free agencies of Bogdanovic and Giles. By my math, if Bogdanovic were to receive a $20 million offer sheet this summer, the Kings would have about $11 million of space under the tax to fill 4 roster spots. They're currently projected to finish with a mid-late lottery pick that would eat into that $11m number quickly. This is where the leverage comes in... the Cavs could let the Kings know they intend on giving large offer sheets to Bogdan/Giles in the upcoming summer, likely forcing them into the tax, or close to it if they choose to match. You can't tell me going into the tax for a non-playoff team is an option for Sacramento while bringing back the same roster.
The Kings also have no outgoing draft picks in the future, and have three additional 2020 second round picks in addition to their own. I'm sure there'd be negotiations around draft compensation as well in addition to the players above.
The Cavs could also flip Dedmon in a separate deal, or use him as an expiring next year ($1m guarantee in 2021-22) if they so choose.
In the end, their roster would shape up as follows:
PG: Garland, Sexton, Exum
SG: KPJ, Osman
SF: Bogdanovic, Windler
PF: Nance, Giles
C: Dedmon
Along with a top pick and their choice of either Tristan's bird rights or ~ $20m in cap space.
The other key part of this deal is the long term outlook. Taking Love off the books, adding say $35 million for salaries to Bogdanovic/Giles/Dedmon partial guarantee, and adding an additional estimated $18 million for draft picks in the next two drafts, the Cavs could have one last chance in free agency with about $20 million in space in the summer of 2021 (and players theoretically entering the prime).
