I'm ready to throw dollars at John Johnson III.

That's my No. 1 target if the Browns are gonna splurge.
What do you like about Johnson that puts him ahead of Maye, Harris and Williams?

Personally, I love Maye's versatility, especially his ability in coverage and would rank him #1 on my free agent safety list. I have a hard time believing he'll be available, but if he is, and we want to spend money at safety, he's my number one target.

For some reason I feel like Johnson plays like a bigger safety than Maye, Harris or Williams... that he's someone you can move up into the box if need be. He's plenty fine in coverage, but doesn't jump off the screen the way the others do.

I'd also be lying if I said I watched enough tape of him to justify that take.

Important Stefanski quotes buried at the end of Andrew Gribble's mailbag:

"Some guys learn from doing. Some guys learn from listening and being on the board. I think Grant is a very conscientious kid," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said midway through the season. "He is making sure that this year he is still spending a lot of time and a lot of energy to understand the scheme and understand his role so when he hits the ground running, he is ready to go."

And just to stoke the excitement a little bit more, Stefanski said Tuesday that he had seen Delpit in the facility and he looked "great."

As far as becoming a starter, that will be on Delpit to prove in training camp. The Browns will make him earn it, just like every other player on the roster will have to earn their job.

"You never know with significant injuries how that ultimately unfolds," Berry said in January. "The one thing I can tell you about Grant and Greedy (Williams) is the way that those two have attacked their approach to rehab and staying engaged with the team and really they have prepared every week as if they were going to play even when it became obvious that they were not, I am very optimistic and very bullish on their physical recovery and then ultimately, when they do get back, of being able to play at a high level for us."

I think it's a much safer bet to place on Delpit being healthy, and good, this season than on Greedy.

I still think the safe, responsible thing is to make sure you have someone you can play at those positions in case those players can't contribute. But if you make me place our season's success on the outcome of one of the players, I'm betting on Delpit every time.

I know this is all coachspeak... but it's too easy to get excited right now, especially with how much I liked Delpit coming out.

You're probably right, but after reading that piece on Greedy that was linked here a few days ago, I really hope he can make it back too. What he went through sounds terrifying, and his urge to get back indicates that he really does love the game. I wouldn't blame anyone for hanging it up if they had to go through that kind of loss of mobility in one arm.

He goes about it so quietly… NFL rushing leader next year.

I don't even care if he's the rushing leader. I hope he isn't, and I suspect he won't be. Henry will get more carries per game than Chubb, and it likely won't be close.

That doesn't mean that Chubb isn't the best rusher in football. If we're blowing teams out, and keeping guys healthy, there should be plenty of carries for Hunt and our third RB to go around.

They are all good players and I would take any of them.

In the most basic of explanations...

Johnson is four years younger than Harris and I think would be better over the life of a four year contract than Harris.

He’s a bit more versatile than like Williams who I view as more of a pure FS.

He’s may end up being a bit cheaper than Maye as well

PFF projects them all at...

Maye 15M AAV, 28.5M GTD
Williams 14.25 AAV, 30M GTD
Harris 14M AAV with 27.5M GTD
Johnson III 13M AAV, 25M GTD

Any of them would be good to add to Harrison and a hopefully healthy Delpit.

Latest from MKC.

Pass rushers: lists Von Miller, Trey Hendrickson, Carl Lawson Haason Reddick and Yannick Ngakoue as targets.

Linebackers: lists Lavonte David, Matt Milano and Jarrad Davis as targets.

Also mentions Breshad Perriman as an option if Higgins departs.

What does it say about Lattimore?

Just that the Browns will have interest if he hits the trade market.

Well, that's assuming that isn't just Mary Kay guessing at to the players in which the Browns might be interested based upon her understanding of who is available, and what she believes the Browns needs to be.

I doubt there is a shred of truly "inside" knowledge in her article. No way in hell AB would leak the names of specific free agents in which the Browns might truly have elevated interest other than in the rather useless general context of "he's a nice player who could help a team" kind of crap.

Gotcha. You mentioned number one if we want to splurge, which made me think Maye was the obvious choice.

I definitely didn't consider age. That's a good point.

Any of them would be a splurge for the Browns if they're going to end up getting $13-15M AAV.

If the Browns are going to come out of free agency with one big ticket player, I'd prefer it to be a S more than a pass rusher, but I suspect the Browns feel different and will spend on an EDGE and draft secondary.

How much do to but the following argument:

Of all the positions on defense, Browns are least likely to try and add a starry S, because they are ok with Harrison and Delpit, as opposed to every other position, where they could use a new starter.
