Considering the guys drafted 17th and 18th in 2016 both made the Pro Bowl, it stands to reason that the process wasn’t necessarily the problem, just the execution.

Trading back is usually a good decision from a value perspective, but if the person in charge botches the picks they do make, it doesn’t matter.

Yup. People only look at the result and not the process. Yeah, they whiffed on that particular pick, but that doesn't mean trading down wasn't a good idea value-wise. It almost always is, especially when you gain additional day one and two picks for doing so.

It's also worth noting that the team used the picks they got from trading down to draft David Njoku and Jabrill Peppers. Njoku had his year derailed by injury and bad coaching, but he was looking like a potential breakout candidate heading into this season. And Peppers is a very good safety who we traded as part of a package for Odell Beckham.

That's fair, but the further back you move, the harder it becomes to get it right. And if you get it wrong, after passing up an elite player, it's catastrophic.

Peppers has had one awful season, one good season, and from what I could tell, a pretty "meh" season with the Giants.

That's not a very good player, not yet anyway. Though he's certainly better than the trash play we had at Safety last season.

It also resulted in the pick that became Denzel Ward. In the end, the Browns traded a #2 overall pick for a #4 overall pick (two years removed, but still), a #15 overall pick, a #25 overall pick, one or two additional second rounders (the pick that became Deshone Kizer was one of them), and a whole bunch of lower picks. Some might disagree, but I'd make those moves every time, even if some of those high-profile picks didn't pan out.

It's like trading a ball of pocket lint for $100, then using that $100 on a whore who gives you the clap. Might not have been the best use of the $100 ... but it doesn't make the original trade any less smart.

After Kitchens and Dorsey were let go, those plugged in said DePo liked Stefanski and Berry.....after an “exhaustive” search For both coach an GM, we end up with both who DePo wanted from the start (assuming Berry takes the job) - just Hire them both and stop with the dog and pony show.

it’s to the point that I don’t even care about new uniforms at this point.

I suppose. But that's not exactly what the favorite was when the process started. At least give Haslam credit for finally listening to his supposed trusted adviser.

Paton has played this brilliantly, IMO.

The stink of his rejection is not great. The guy who rarely interviews for anything and has rejected multiple teams requests, makes him appear to be a white whale for a major NFL job if he wants one.

Speaking of white whales, this post got liked by Triplethreat.

There becomes a point where you tease so often people lose interest and pretty sure he is at that point.

For the last 3 or 4 years he has been playing hard to get. He has either declined interviews or interviewed then bowed out to 20-25% of the league, maybe higher? In a very incestuous league i think he is playing with fire. He goes another offseason either declining interviews or going through the process and then saying no and teams are going to stop looking at him.

But maybe the guy just really loves Minnesota, in which case good for him. But from a business/money perspective dude isnt smart. Pretty sure he could be entering year 3 or 4 being paid as a GM at this point.

Edit: i like money. Maybe paton doesn't

Who knows for certain but at first, many speculated, Haslam wanted Josh McD, and Cesario or Ziglar would come with him. DePo favored Stefanski and Berry. Damned if you do damned if you don’t I guess, but Haslam listened to his trusted GM last year and ended up with Kitchens. I am ok with Stefanski, was hoping for Paton as he wouldn’t be the supposed predetermined favorite.

I guess I was hoping that all remnants of the dysfunction are removed (save for Haslam who unfortunately isn’t going anywhere). If you wipe out Freddie and Dorsey, go all the way, let DePo move on as well. Bring in a coach and GM that are aligned without the DePo variable present

The dysfunction will continue as long as there are remnants in place. The main remnant is Haslam.

Lube and Amazon gift card are ready to go. “90% it’s Berry”
If it is Berry, still give you props for all your info and for owning it.
On a more serious note, will this video be streaming on youtube, twitch, facebook live, disney +, etc? Any way Zegura can be an extra hand just in case you need help?

What am I missing here?

If the Browns would've hired Stefanski & Berry right off the bat with very little search (as some have stated they might as well have done), a huge chunk of the fan base would have (rightfully) lambasted them for it.

So, instead the Browns actually do something they planned on doing, conduct an exhaustive search for a HC, interview 3 respected candidates for the GM position, go through the process, and still a chunk of the fan base blasts them for it because they ended up still hiring two guys who have been amongst the favorites at each respective position since the get go..?

Call me crazy, but I've been surprised and happy with how they've conducted both searches.

Sometimes, guys just want to stay where they're comfortable and have had success. By most accounts, that's what happened here. I get Haslam and the Browns organization are easy targets, but when multiple accounts suggest he was impressed by the organization & simply wanted to stay in Minnesota, there's simply nothing we could have done.

I get that Haslam hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt yet, but by all accounts, he showed restraint by not giving in to outrageous demands his favorite HC candidate wanted; actually listened to the guy whose recommendations for the past two coaching searches have gone on to do well elsewhere; and is sticking to the cohesiveness and alignment that he's preached all off-season.

Now, whether or not he can stay the course going forward is another story. Do I trust him to? I can't say that for sure yet. But this off-season has been a big win thus far in my eyes.

What we had last year is GM and HC aligned with DePo sidelined. Heck, his entire predraft input was literally thrown in the trash (if the report is believed).

Did I miss something or are we just assuming that Ossenfort is out of the picture?
