Heard part of an interview with Breer on Fox's show. He all but claimed the analytics guys were going to be calling plays in real time. To his credit Bull tried to focus on other teams using data heavily but Breer went with the "Maybe needed in baseball but football guys have been using analytics since the leather helmet days" shtick. Useless. McDaniels is trying hard to get ahead of this by painting the Browns proposed use of data as unprecedented. Not surprised that the media is eating it up but I wish the average Browns fan was smarter than that.

I'm confused... Is this supposed to be dysfunctional or something?

Not to be overly redundant but Jesus Christ... If you're going to be critical of the Haslams, there is plenty to choose from. Letting your personal biases dictate misinformation campaigns or infusing a negative spin into what seems to have been a largely benign process is a dangerous precedent.

Wish I could say Dustin is better than that but... he's not.
Not a bad process but given who it is, I doubt Jimmy and Paul know who can work with who.

I listened to 850 today (Wanted to hear local opinions, I live in Florida) and most of the callers and hosts were very negative about the hire.

Are the masses uninformed or am I way off in liking the hire? Most of the people were off the rails basically acting like a computer is going to call plays and draft players.

I don't agree with Nick Wright on much, but I did when he said "If you are anti-analytics, you are anti-information."

Most fans and most local media types are not necessarily mensas

Too much information means shit especially when you don't know what to do with it.

KISS me I'm analycious.

I'm one of the most pro-analytics posters on the board. I've written about it, love the math, and think the most cutting edge teams are still using it to uncover new market inefficiencies in the NFL.

With that said, you have to remember two things. First, because McDaniels grew up here and has interviewed in Cleveland before, he has connections with local media. Moreover, it sounds like people within the Browns organization were telling the media that it was going to be McDaniels, so they then conveyed that information to their listeners.

Second, it was not all that long ago when the Browns had their most painful seasons in recent memory, and analytics were a big part of that front office. Regardless of the fact that those analytics people got the picks that let us draft Ward and Chubb and also gave us resources to trade for OBJ, fans remember the bad, especially in this town - and I think that is fair.

I love the hire. Getting a coach who is willing to embrace analytics is a huge pro for this organization. Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, Rams, Titans, 49ers, Packers, and Patriots all have incorporated them into their organizational decision-making. Stefanski is a really unique offensive mind, trained in Shanahan's zone-read system, and is willing to work with other members of the front office.

I think we get spoiled a bit here because we've got a lot of great, rational posters. But yes, your average football fan is a fucking moron.

Note that that doesn't mean this hire is going to work out or was brilliant or anything, but the way that a lot of people are against it solely because it means the team is moving toward a more analytical approach is indicative of how low information the majority of fans are.

I truly believe Jimmy Haslam had every intention of hiring Josh McDaniels until McDaniels got in the interview room and told Jimmy that he intended on blowing up the entire operation from top to bottom.

Haslam IMO wanted to have his cake (DePodesta and an analytics-heavy approach) and eat it too (McDaniels).

I don't know if anyone saw it, but on the Dan Le Batard show today, if you can stand watching it, Tony Khan of the Jags kind of went into how their analytics department works in game and whatnot. Kind of helped me get a better idea of what's going on during a game and what other teams are doing analytics well. Most of it has been brought up in here, but it cleared some stuff up for me.
