I believe you are mistaken. Signing bonuses are spread over the life of a contract, but Vernon only has one year left, so it's all on this year.

Vernon's 15.25M was fully non-guaranteed. Anyone acquiring him could have cut him at any time without owing him a dollar.

He was a much more valuable trade piece before today IMO. This decision almost 100% locks Vernon into being one of the Browns starting EDGE defenders in 2020.

This move appears to be us committing to Vernon as being our option. The Clowney dream is likely dead.

The net effect of this is that Clowney is going to end up signing for even less than he turned down from the Browns.

Per PFT's Mike Florio, the agreement posits that there will be a preseason, though that is apparently still being negotiated. It had been proposed that visiting teams travel and return the same day, but it appears that has been scrapped. Every member of the traveling team will be required to wear masks, and buffets have been outlawed. That may seem minor, but it will make it infinitely more difficult to feed a group of literal linemen. If the league manages to pull it off, 2020 will be a season like no other, hopefully to never be repeated.

Looks like Tretter was leading the players'union push for no preseason whatsoever. But further preseason cuts would limit marginal players, who represent the bulk of the players' union interests anyway, chance to prove themselves.

Although I expect that marginal players will essentially be "on-call" all season in the event of teamwide outbreaks.
