BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How much of that is roll over vs. actual cap space I wonder.

Believe I heard somewhere that approximately $30 million of that is rollover, but I'll see if I can find exact numbers.

EDIT: Exact numbers on the right side panel.

Yeah I did some digging, it looks like we have about 14M in cap space left before rollover, so 30M sounds right.

I wonder if we try and rollover again to help over the next few years with all the players we will have to re-sign or try to use it to grab a guy from a team in cap space hell for draft pick. I do like having a group of analytics guys running the cap though. I do not think Dorsey did us any favors.

Was kinda thinking the same thing. Extensions for Myles, Ward, and Baker are gonna be here before we know it.

Thus far, I think they’ve done a good job of fielding talent while retaining future flexibility.

I agree, plus the cap goes up a ton next year, so should open more money to front load, or do big bonus to help the cap down the road.

Is that cap number set in stone? If not, I'd imagine it's going to drop given current circumstances. I don't believe the NFL regular season will start in September. If the start of the season is pushed back, I would think we'd likely see some type shortened season as well.

If players are currently limited to outdoor workouts and don't have any real lifting setup a their house / apt / condo then it's going to take them a minimum of 2-3 months to get into real game shape. The earliest they'll be able to get back into team facilities or training facilities in general is April 30. Sure, some places will skirt the rules a bit for high profile clients, but gyms have to be really careful at this point in time.

Although the NFL is saying they're still going to host the draft in April, I'd imagine they're going to get a ton of pushback from NFL teams. Sure, they can conduct interviews online, but how would anyone really go about doing a pre-draft workout? Some have the capabilities, some don't.

What if a player tears up his knee or suffers some other type of injury screwing around during this time and a team doesn't have any real way to know?

The Chronicle-Telegram's Scott Petrak believes free agent Everson Griffen is on the Browns' radar.
This isn't surprising given the connections to the Browns' coaching staff. Griffen was with Kevin Stefanski and DC Joe Woods for multiple seasons in Minnesota. The Browns can save $5 million from releasing Olivier Vernon and have been linked to pass rushers to book end with Myles Garrett. After opting out of his Vikings contract, Griffen may have to settle for one-year offers.

how much of an upgrade would Griffen be?

how much of an upgrade would Griffen be?

Griffen is a Pro Bowl caliber defensive end, very explosive at 6'3 274 pounds. So like Vernon, he is compact, but outweighs Vernon by ten pounds. Aside from one off year in 2018 he is reliably going to put pressure on the quarterback moreso than Vernon. He uses his hands on moves extremely well. In the past he has been paid like the second best end behind Hunter.

Downside is that he is 32, and that is a little less than three years older than Vernon.

I can't answer that, but even if he provides Vernon's production at a much lower rate that's a big win. I think we'll be rotating guys opposite Myles rather than having someone that really anchors that side. The one exception could be pulling a stud out of the draft.

There is no sugar-coating it: comparing these two right defensive ends is a study in how frustrating free agency can be.

Everson Griffen was coming off a very frustrating 2018, missing the Pro Bowl for the first time in three straight great years. His missed tackles were up to 6 in only 11 games. Griffen's quarterback hits and tackles for losses were cut in half from his usual. So, he restructured the last year of his deal and returned to his usual form in 2019.

Then we look over at Vernon. His quarterback hits and sacks were both cut in half as well. Most alarming: he went from one missed tackle in 2018 to 8. In short, he had the kind of stinker of an individual performance that caused Griffen to restructure his last year of his contract.

My guess is that this has come up as a way to pressure Vernon's reps to consider a restructure.

Griffen is likely to be cheaper because of his age, and is slightly more reliable to stay on the field and produce.

However, at his peak, Vernon is simply a better player. Vernon is truly a beast when he's healthy.

The other problem is that season-to-season defense is very hard to isolate as a "true decline", mainly because defense is so variable season-to-season.

With Vernon, because injuries had nothing to do with it and he is young, one would expect his 2020 to look closer to 2018.

Griffen had a phenomenal year last year. The question is if his 2018 was an "age" thing (he is getting older) or just simple variation in defensive performance.

My guess is they stick with Vernon. I guess we will see. No way to tell if it is the right or wrong move until the season plays out.

Speaking on reliability.. Griffen has a bit of a bizarre past himself, but he was a captain on the Vikings. I wonder what actually was going on when he threatened to shoot-up a hotel.
