BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wouldn't a player be smart in taking a contract and the attached guarantees while the season is still not fully set in place?

I would think so. Not just because of the status of 2020, but because of the impact the pandemic could have on the salary cap moving forward. People are speculating that the salary cap could be lowered. IMO, Clowney (or his agent) would be complete idiots to not try to cash in now while they can.

Not really, if they don't play, they don't get paid and owe back a pro-rated amount of the up front money.

That is possible. But it is also possible that the longer Clowney delays in taking his best offer available, that offer could go away/ disappear.
It is my understanding that IF the Browns signed Clowney, then the Browns would cut loose Vernon.
Not necessarily, I thought? Once Myles swung the helmet, we were incredibly thin up front last year, especially when other guys like Sheldon Richardson started missing more snaps. Having that depth while our 2017 & 2018 classes are still on their rookie deals would be so helpful.

As this drags on, IF the Browns see/ realize that Vernon is healthy & motivated, they might determine its better to deal with what is here already then trying to bring in someone else.

Big if; felt like he was made of glass last year.

The value for Vernon at $15.5MM is less than the value for Clowney at basically any feasible salary.

Yes the Browns D-line depth was limited after Myles was suspended but there had been some other hits to the depth along the way.
I still dont get why the Browns dealt away the one D line guy (Genard Avery) during last season..

This off season so far the Browns have added DE Clayborn & DT Billings so far. Perhaps more additions will happen.

I fully agree. We have depth behind our two starting DE's in Clayborn and Thomas. If we pick up Clowney, unless we're positive there won't be rollover cap anymore after this season, we're 100% cutting Vernon--there's no reason to carry a 15.5 million dollar backup DE when you have a very good, capable veteran in Clayborn, and a young guy (Thomas) who needs to either show he can play, or prepare to not be on this roster next year.

Does that mean Ken Kovash is out?
