Browns trade Danny Shelton to Pats

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Shelton was a decent player. We as fans tend to over value our players. He was a rotational DT on a team that went 1-31. He was not a Superbowl MVP. He is also in the last year of his contract, so NE is renting him a year. Not gonna get much more for him than what we did.

You maintain your potential home run hitting picks all the while knowing you were not taking on that many rookie contracts for 2018

Getting rid of Danny opens up the door for Larry and you at least move up a round per se (since it’s the Pats) next year...

You’ve moved some picks for quality players as well... The capital is being used accordingly to improve the team one way or another..

So people are worried about cap space when it comes to Shelton, but with Landry it doesn’t matter how overpaid he is because we have a mountain of cap space?

The difference is that we had other guys who were as good as Shelton at that position - Obunjobi and Coley, and they may even have liked Brantley more as well. But we didn't have a 3rd WR. In other words, we're willing to spend more on players we really need. We're not willing to spend more on players we need much less.

You're right -- there weren't people here calling their shots and saying "Shelton must go". But it's also one of those moves you can look at after the fact and say "okay, I can see the logic behind doing it."

Bottom line is that the Shelton trade really didn't create a hole -- it was probably the deepest position on the team already.

Yep. Can't wait until we fire Williams and the next hot defensive coordinator is a 3-4 guy and we do this carousel all over again. You know Ogunjobi looks great as a 3 tech, but the Browns are asking him to move to End in Coach Whoever's base 3-4. And Head Scout Dorsey spies a guy he can get in the 3rd round who'd just Perfect. So long Mr. Ogunjobi.

The 2010-2016 drafts have been for the most part? A disaster.

You've hit on a few, you've found a few gems here and there, but the misses are the reason we're staring at the 1-31 record right now.

There were chances to define "Franchise" players, guys who you can add as an asset to the team...and yes, you've missed on any potential chance to do that.

I'm not worried about that anytime soon, because Myles Garrett is the future of the defense and he is a 4-3 end. Who left on the defensive front makes sense in a 3-4 at this point? Nassib maybe? This is a four man defensive line from now on.

Yeah, not a huge fan of this. Seems like we just dumped relatively solid talent and a 5th rounder for a late 3rd rounder. Maybe it'll work out, but I'm not sure.

Danny Shelton is a quality run stopper, but that’s pretty much all he does well.

A good run stopper making 2-3M a year (Shelton’s rookie deal $) is fine value, but his 5th year option is 11.7M and he was going to look to cash in.

I have no doubt he’ll do well as run stopper for New England, but he’s still a situational player in the end.

I have no problem with getting rid of this loser. A major cog in the 0-16 wheel last season. The clown ranted about the parade. Hey Danny, the parade was had because of losers like you. Another number one draft pick bust. Jump on piles in New England and see how long Belichek puts up with it.

Defense was #2 in rushing yards per carry allowed. Go ahead and blame 0-16 on him, though.

Look he was a disappointment for where he was picked. But if cards fell a certain way you could have just gotten a compensatory pick if you let him go. This is a giveaway, and there's also the fact that it's the Pats which makes me wonder why we bothered. DL was our deepest and strongest unit last year. We just weakened it.

Disagree.

Ogunjobi was better than him. Shelton was good depth, but the line could easily get better with the right talent.

Maurice Hurst for example, would look awesome next to Ogunjobi.

I don't think they're overvaluing Shelton per se, because he turned into being very good for his role. I think it's more that people are overvaluing the impact a 1 or 2 down player has on a defense.

Don't get me wrong, those 1/2 down players are needed, but they're replaceable.

...unless your defense rarely forces the opposition into third down situations. At least, we can assume that was Ray Farmer's logic, right?

Yeah get rid of him he didn’t like the parade!

I'm out on Dorsey. The more I see and hear just seems like the same old song. Gave up on Sasha one year to early.
