BEREA, Ohio -- Cornerback Daylon McCutcheon and right offensive tackle Ryan Tucker, two of Cleveland's steadiest players the past few seasons, will both undergo knee surgery in hopes of being ready for the season opener.

McCutcheon, the only player left from the club's 1999 draft class, will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday. Tucker, too, will have a procedure to clean up torn cartilage in his left knee.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said he expects both veterans to be back in time for the Sept. 10 opener against New Orleans.

"It's usually three to four weeks (recovery time) on those scopes, and then we'll move on," Crennel said.

The operations come less than a week after center LeCharles Bentley suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice. Bentley is expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days.

Tucker hasn't practiced since Friday, when he walked off the field about 45 minutes into the team's workout. The 31-year-old Tucker started all 16 games last season, his fourth in Cleveland. He missed the final nine games in 2004 after injuring his left knee.

In 2003, Tucker was the only offensive player to take part in every snap.

McCutcheon, the Browns' surest tackler, didn't miss a game last season after sitting out much of training camp with migraine headaches. The 29-year-old, taken in the third round in 1999, has made 96 career starts for Cleveland. He's trying to beat out Leigh Bodden for a starting spot.

Why can't the Browns catch a break? I mean, just one injury after another to key players..

The only good news that might come from this, is that Bodden will probably will start alongside Baxter..

It's not bad news really, I mean if they can get healed up to be better of before the season by all means. Bodden > Cutch Also helps some younger guys get more reps.

Wow, the Browns’ O-line has really took a beating so far. I guess we will have a patchwork line for 1 more year.

I see that they are projected to come back hopefully by September 10, but will they be conditioned to play on that day?

Although while Cutch is one of the best “Backups” in the NFL right now, he will not be missed until he comes back. Everyone and their mother knew Bodden was the winner.

Anytime you have knee surgery it IS BAD NEWS. It isnt as bad as if they would cut him open, but its still bad news.

Ryan Tucker and Daylon McCutcheon will each have arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday in hopes of being healthy enough to play when the Browns open the regular season Sept. 10 against the Saints.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said both veterans have some loose cartilage that will be repaired.

"It's usually 3-4 weeks (recovery time) on those scopes, and then we'll move on," Crennel said.

Tucker walked off the field just prior to practice Friday afternoon and didn't return. He's watched practice from the sideline since, wearing a brace on his left knee and riding the exercise bike.

McCutcheon sat out Sunday and both of Monday's practices due to swelling in his right knee.

"It gives some younger people more opportunities," Crennel said. "Nat Dorsey and Jon Dunn will get more reps than they would (at right tackle) if Tucker was here.

"Same thing in the defensive backfield - (Daven) Holly will get more reps. Antonio Perkins will get more reps."

Crennel said the team wanted to treat McCutcheon with ice and rest, but the swelling didn't subside and the doctors elected to use arthroscopic surgery to clean out the loose cartilage.

McCutcheon had been battling Leigh Bodden for the starting left cornerback job. An 8-year veteran and the only Browns' 1999 draft choice still with the team, McCutcheon also missed time in last year's training camp due to headaches but came back to start all 16 regular season games.

Kirk Chambers, Dorsey and Dunn have seen action at right tackle in Tucker's absence.

THIS IS GOOD NEWs, they both should be healthy and ready to go for the start of the season.

With our aging line, Im kinda even more mad now that we didnt make more of an effort to get some youth and depth in the draft. Picks like Wilson in the third round was really not needed....wishfull thinking now. Still not a fan of that draft

A MAC we kinda needed another WR, F. jackson dropped more passes then bryant.

Winslow, Joe, Northcutt isnt bad. Plus Braylon will be back. Where does he fit in the long run???

A Mac - I believe Northcutt is a FA after this year, so possibly Wilson is his replacement? JJ is up in years

but

I'm right there with you, our lack of drafting offensive linemen has really pissed me off these past couple drafts and I'm not talking about late round picks.

Tuckers aging, Andruzzi's aging, Coleman's contract I believe is up after this year. Obviously we needed depth to begin with, I'm not a fan at all of signing no bodies off of waivers for depth.

Freaking draft a good young tackle, guard early in the draft some freaking time, it doesn't have to be a first round pick.

Why does it seem like every browns FO lately neglects to draft o-linemen?

Personally I'm worried about our offense 10x more than our defense.

Mo Carthon is a questionable o-coordinator, going in with a young qb, lack of an o-line depth and young talent, Savage knows defense, Crennel knows defense. Our defense is in good hands with Savage, Crennel and Grantham.

I'm afraid we'll never have the power running game we all want and ability to attack down the field, but with Braylon, Kellen we have some weapons no doubt

I believe we wanted to shore up our O-line in Free Agency. Getting guys like Shaffer and Bentley really did upgrade us.. until Bentley got hurt. It sucks that we don't have the depth now, but really would have done fine had Bentley not gotten injured.

Wilson was a good pick at the 3rd round.. Northcutt is not a good 3rd down wide out.... I wanted us to get someone that could constantly catch the ball at 3rd down, and move Cutt permanently to punt returns... Wilson is that.

Winslow can be used as a WR, but still, TE is his natural position. Heiden is quite inconsistent... it will be good to have great talent in Winslow that Frye can rely on, if he lives up to his billing.

Winslow still catches the ball out of the WR position.

Northcutt is a slot WR, Wilson is not.

The funny thing is that Frye has been hooking up with Northcutt more than several times in Training Camp for 40+ yard bomb TouchDowns.

I don’t think they will that compelled to move Northcutt to just punt return just yet.

lets just wait till Cutt disappears in the regular season games as always.
