Carmelo Anthony

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Would you like Melo on this team if you didn't have to trade Love?

  • Yes

  • No

  • Depends on who we have to trade (really?)

Why wouldn't OKC just buy out Melo themselves?

Melo might not accept anything less than a 100% buyout. OKC may not be prepared to offer that.

Why use George as a way to get out of Melo's 1 year deal, to then just pay whatever guys we send back in the trade?

I don't think they would.

OKC would be getting additional assets back; i.e. Osman, and perhaps another team's first rounder (i.e., Charlotte).

FWIW, Smith and Hill are both large expirings so their contracts will have value for teams next offseason. For example, a team looking to cut salary could send out almost $24M and take back Hill's $19M, then waive him for only $1M, saving $23M in salary. JR Smith is similar, in that his final year is only partially guaranteed.

Overall, I think the logic here is to maximize George's departure .. so if he's leaving, for OKC, how can they make the most of it? If that's (1) unloading Melo, while (2) getting some assets back; while (3) getting some useful players; then that might make sense.

There's nothing at all that we can offer OKC for PG13 that's better than what LAL can.

Okay, I see.

Yeah. I think it'd take more than just Osman for them to want to do that. Another asset that we don't currently have, as you alluded to.

Here's a thought:

Cavs work out a deal to trade the BKN pick (player) + salary for Charlotte's 2018 Top-8 protected first+Kemba (protections diminish over time). That would give us Kemba + a future lottery pick to trade; we then trade that plus Osman+salary (Hill/Smith) for George+Melo.

As far as cap flexibility, George's salary is only guaranteed for 2019-20; and Smith has a $3-4M guarantee in 2019-20. Our $5.1M in cash should effectively make both 2019 expirings. So almost all of that money would come off the books in 2019-20 regardless.

For the Thunder, if George is walking, does it make sense to keep Melo and pay him out the year, or to trade him for expirings plus some minor assets?

Why are the Hornets giving up Kemba Walker to move up two spots in the draft?

Assuming you meant 2019 pick for Charlotte.

But I forgot about the partial guarantees for Hill and JR, which assuages the Thunder cap concern. If we give them some legit asset and Hill and JR I could see OKC being enticed to do that.

Of course, biggest caveat is that we'd have to wait until after the draft to trade the player we take with the Brooklyn pick. What is the deadline for George to opt out? If it's before the draft, that'll be hard to get everything accomplished.

EDIT - Also, might have to take on Batum in the Kemba deal

He has to exercise his option by June 30th

They're not... We're not trading our current pick for theirs, we're trading the BKN pick for their future pick.

To me, that looks like the Brooklyn pick for Kemba plus a future first.

Yes, that's right...

It's the BKN pick (we pick, then trade 30 days later) for Kemba Walker and a future first from Charlotte with decreasing lottery protections, say Top-8/6/4/3/2, year over year..

If you're asking why they're doing this, it's because they're trading Kemba Walker on the last year of his deal for the BKN pick, which is what they wanted to do in the first place. To make up the difference in value (Kemba only having one year left); they add in a future first rounder.

Strategically, they'll tank the following year and end up 8th or worse without Kemba, and end up not conveying, so they'd likely not be worried about 2018-19's pick conveying to the Cavs.

This literally doesn't make sense, which is odd, because your trade ideas usually do a good job of taking the other team's mindset into account. But there's no reason for the Hornets to trade a future first in a deal like this unless they're also getting out from under Batum's contract.
