So this is year 1 under the tax. Good chance for us to not only reset repeater tax, but also recoup some money for Dans deep pockets.

Not sure free agents will really be an option anytime soon, but there is also no one aside from Delly that I would want to re-sign.

The rules for salary cap count the players' full salary, but luxury tax calculates only on the portion that the team pays the player.

When a player is getting vet minimum and has more than 2 years experience, the League pays the difference over a pro-rated second year vet minimum.
Last year, the NBA paid $881K on Frye's salary, paid $36K on Stauskas's salary, and paid $6K on Payne's salary.

So even though the Cavs had $124,623,504 against the salary cap, after you subtract out the League's contributions, they only paid about $123,699,000 towards the luxury tax, which let them slip under the limbo bar by a whisker.

There is another rule than says undrafted min salary players in their first or second season count as 2nd year vet salary when calculating luxury tax. The idea behind these rule is to help put 10+ year vets and undrafted rookies on the same footing when it comes to competing for end of the bench roster spots. Pretty sure this is the reason why the Hawks signed Vince Carter instead of me this past off season. It also gives teams some incentive to sign their second round picks instead of stashing them forever.

With respect to the five impending free agents (TT, Henson, Clarkson, Delly and Knight), let’s say the Cavs either traded them or let them walk at the end of the season. They would go into next season with $67.8 M committed as the chart shows.

Let’s say they also traded Love. That would knock it down to $36.6 M, assuming they only got draft picks in return. So the Cavs could conceivably start next season with:

C Zizic

PF Nance

SF Osman, Windler

SG Sexton, Porter

PG Garland

A top 10 pick in the 2020 draft (safe to assume since all those guys were traded), most likely a forward or center.

They’d be about $80 million under the cap with eight core players on the roster. Nance would be the oldest at 27.

If we assume the last 4-5 players on the roster will make under $10 million total (guys like Blossomgame and Deng), that leaves about $70 million for two spots, assuming we go with a 10-man rotation.

Anybody down for that?

If we keep Love we’d still be looking at $39 million and we’d have nine rotation spots set, or maybe eight if you don’t see Zizic as a rotational player. But he’ll only be 22 next year. If they don’t get a good offer for Love they could go that route.

With $67 million coming off the books with the five expiring contracts the Cavs will be in a position to finish off the team going into next season.

OK, what did I miss, other than that nobody could absorb Love's contract without giving a big contract or two back?

OK, what did I miss, other than that nobody could absorb Love's contract without giving a big contract or two back?

Depends on the big contract you get back for Love. Say the Nuggets really want him. They could trade Millsap for him if they feel Love will help their window over the next few years - and Millsap would come off the books next season. I doubt this happens, but Love could get traded for less future money than he is worth.

But other guys like TT, Clarkson, etc could get traded for contracts that stretch beyond this season. So the Cavs have to weigh what they get against the contract they have to take back. I mid-first round pick plus a young player with some upside may be worth an extra year of salary, especially since they would not be in the tax and the FA class stinks.

There are a lot of teams strapped with just "meh" players. Our expirings should have a fair amount of value at the deadline.

Can't wait to see the sleek new updated spreadsheet post Drummond trade.

Especially with how he's been playing lately, seeing Nance's deal go down in cap number every year looks mighty nice
