Chief- How'd the Chalk Talk go? Anything worth being there for?
Nothing groundbreaking, although I was surprised at how frank and open Ferry was in kicking potential players' names around. Highlights that I can recall:
- He did say that if any reporters were in attendance that this was all off the record... but I assume he didn't mean RCF
- He said they respect Kidd as a player and basically it is up to Rod Thorn as to how Kidd's future plays out. He also did mention Miller, Miller, and Bibby by name. You could tell that he really wants a true PG on this team.
- He also said the team has actively been trying to not rely so much on LBJ initiating things. He seemed to think that the offense has been moving much better lately when LeBron is the second or third touch on a possession. I believe this is something we've been saying for years here :chuckles:
- I was surprised how open he was about Derek Fisher. He said he thought Fish really would have fit well here and they did basically everything they could to get him here. He seemed pretty crushed we didn't land him.
- He confirmed that he has been looking to make some sort of deal for two months now and he expects to be active up until the trading deadline. But he also reiterated that he believes next year will be a bigger opportunity because of the expiring contracts. But he also said that doesn't mean something can't get done this year.
- He said that the team looked at the 2006 draft and would have been happy with one of Boobie or Shannon panning out. They are extremely satisfied with Boobie and not so much with Shannon. But he still believes Shannon has a solid NBA future and the reason they didn't extend him is they feel he deserves an opportunity in this league.
- He said they didn't 'ask' LBJ about extending Mike Brown, they 'told' him. Ferry said after the extension he went in and explained all the reasoning to LeBron. After he was done LeBron said something to the effect of 'cool, Coach deserved this and we're happy to have him.'
- He also said he was extremely disappointed with the Finals last year. He believes the team didn't get outplayed so much, but rather just weren't prepared. He thinks we were just happy to get there and weren't mentally ready. Not to say that the Spurs don't have more talent, but he thinks we never believed we could win. He thinks that if we get back it will be a different story now.
Again, this is all from memory and not verbatim of what was said. If anyone else was in attendance and can expand or correct anything, feel free. This was my view of the whole thing:
