Chiefs dilemma

Alex smith is a band aid not a franchise quarterback. the guy may have a long career and be a teir starter for years to come but you dont pass on a qb just because you have him.

Although i dont beleive the chiefs draft a quarterback i dont see the alex smith signing as an argument against it.

Smith is a solid guy who doesnt turnover the ball. He gives them stability at the position that matt cassell couldnt provide. this allows the Chiefs to build.

now this

Here is what new Chiefs GM John Dorsey has to say.

“There is no quarterback where personnel guys can definitely say, ‘He’s a first-round pick,’ ” Dorsey said. “There were so many inconsistencies in the collective group. There was not one guy that stood up and said, ‘I’m the guy in the position this year.’ There really wasn’t one clear-cut guy.

“There are too many technical flaws, scheme flaws. There are so many different variables that there are a lot of people all over the place on naming the top four or five guys and who those guys would be.”

Then this

“I think Andy is a really good evaluator of quarterbacks,” Dorsey said. “I want him and I to go to as many quarterback workouts as possible and actually set our own up.”

while the trade for Smith reinforces the gms position on the available qb's in the draft, Drafting a qb while having just acquired an established quality starter has been a common practice.

Bowe, Fasano , and jamaal charles gives the Chiefs a ball control offense. A d line or o line pick seems to be the next logical step for them

I think Geno could be a solid pick if he were to face an Aaron Rodgers situation. Slip a bit, get drafted late in the first and then ride the pine for a while. Don't think he's worth it in the top 10, let alone 1 overall.

I think the Chiefs basically have to take Geno Smith, if it's even close on their evaluation. They have Alex Smith, so it's not like they would have to rush him in to play. He could spend the year learning and transitioning to the pro game. I look at a draft like 2008 when the Dolphins and Rams both passed on Matt Ryan. Those teams needed QB's at that point. You look through most of the rest of the top 10 and the Chiefs/Jets/Jags should have all tried to trade up to #2 and get Ryan. So many front office people were fired because they missed out on this.

Is Geno as good as Matt Ryan? Of course not, but the risks associated in missing out on a franchise guy far exceed whatever is gained by signing some defensive or offensive linemen. Those guys are available for $$$ every offseason, but stud FA QB's are not. And Geno only costs like 24m/4 years total, which is a manageable figure if he just busts altogether.

Well you would think that the Chiefs wouldn't even waste their time and money (alot of money) to get Alex Smith if they were planning on taking Geno with the number one pick. That doesn't make any sense to me. They could have used that money from Alex Smith on other needs if they were going to take Geno. I don't see it happening unfortunetly. I wanted Geno but we will see what happens.

Tavon Austin. Watch.

Alex Smith is not a franchise QB, but he's a huge upgrade on what they had. He's signed for 2 more years I think. I agree that it would be strange to draft Geno after trading a #2 for Alex, but I'd hope they are looking at all options. If it is close, you gotta take the QB. It's not just about how he'll play next year, but hopefully the 12 after that as well

I'm with you. Are you a Chiefs fan too?

Nah, I grew up a Steelers fan and still follow them but I'm evolving more into a fan of the overall league.

I don't see Tavon Austin...great talent but if you draft him you are yanking the cord on the McCluster experiment....too similar of players

Are you guys talking about Tavon Austin at #1?? You guys must be high.

Yeah, Kiper has him at 16 in his mock and McShay has him at 13.

Rumor has it that the Chiefs might take Eric Fisher number one now. They better trade Branden Albert either way.
