Classic NBA

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dec. 13, 1983

Detroit beat Denver 186-184 in a triple-overtime game that set NBA records for most points scored in a game, one team (Detroit-186) and combined (370); most field goals, one team (Detroit-74) and combined (142); and combined assists (93).

70 point club would make up an interesting team.

Wilt Chamberlain. Kobe Bryant. David Thompson. David Robinson. Elgin Baylor. Booker. Mitchell.

I was trying to think who'd be the point guard. It'd be Mitchell and Wilt. Wilt had an 8.6 apg in one of his seasons with Philly.

Bryant would be a catch-and-shoot guy. Wilt would post up as would Robinson. Mitchell and Booker also could be catch and shoot. Thompson and Baylor would be slashers and midrange.

Of course, everyone could do everything. These are all hall of famers. I could coach this team.

No, you couldn't, and neither could anyone else. Not enough FGAs to go around.

True. I know nothing about coaching. But I do know Wilt and Mitchell are capable of distributing.

That's seven people? I guess I'd have David Thompson and Booker on the bench. I'd sub Thompson for Elgin at SF. I'd sub Booker for Mitchell. I'd rest Kobe as much as he wanted. If Robinson needed a rest, I'd put Elgin in for him at SF and go with four guards and Wilt. I'd play Wilt 48 minutes, unless he wanted a break.

I'd post up my bigs every time. If they get doubled, they pass out. Otherwise, they'll score.

I figure we'll never lose, so no one will complain.

Came across this interesting item on eBay. It’s a Cavs game program from 1982 when the Stepien led team played games in Cincinnati. Notice the NBA Draft page image and you will note the Cavs traded the #1 pick in the first round that became James Worthy. Also notable picks in that years first round included Dominique Wilkins at #3. Oh and Cavs did get back a #10 pick that became John Bagley.
