What I don’t understand with Baker...

What happened in year one that made him look to be very promising, and his since totally disappeared?

On top of that:

- In his first year, he didn't get the majority of first team reps at QB, as they went to Tyrod
- He was on a team that had lost 41 of its last 45 games
- He was originally coached by Hue Jackson, literally the least successful coach in modern NFL history and Todd Haley for half a year; the same staff that played Carlos Hyde over Nick Chubb
- He endured a midseason coaching change
- His receivers were - Jarvis Landry having objectively the worst year of his career, NJoku, a rookie in Callaway, Hollywood Higgins and the corpse of Breshad Perriman
- A rookie UDFA started at LT for 8 games, Greg Robinson the other 8

Everything was against him that first year. It's baffling he was more successful when he more stuff against him.

The league got tape on him and realized he doesn’t go though his progressions, stares down his receivers and is terrible under pressure.

Pretty simple to me. He was a wide-eyed innocent with everything to prove. He had very little exposure to the toxic culture our ownership has built with the constant turnover in the front office.

The more systems hes had to learn, the unstable coaching staffs (which were fighting themselves), increased pressure every year to perform, coupled with the drinking of his own kool aid, caused him to be where he is.

It's sort of what we did to Tim Couch except with more talent around him. Shit at least Couch only had two Head Coaches in his time here. Baker is already on number 4. If Baker flames out, I put it mostly on the front office/ownership which has been easily the worst in all sports imo. How is any player supposed to become the best player they can in an environment like this?

And he's not a leader. He's done several questionable things as the #1 overall pick QB of a bad franchise trying to turn things around including

Getting into fight with people in the media like Grossi and Rex Ryan who have been more right than wrong on their criticism of him

Coming out and talking shot about The Giants drafting Daniel Jones only for Baker himself to come into camp out of shape and have a horrible season

He's not humble at all

Makes too many excuses for shit that he himself controls like getting in sync with his receivers and reading the defense and watching film

Scoffing at the Johnny Manziel comparisons when Baker has had more than a few Johnny Football moments which off the top of my head include

The BJ at Cheesecake Factory fiasco
Gesturing whipping out his sausage on the sideline which reminded me of Johnny flipping off the Washington Football Team's sideline during a preseason game
Showing up Hue Jackson who has decades of experience in the NFL while Baker had barely more than a full season
Being out of shape and buying into his own hype
Calling out the fans after laying several eggs at home
Continuously using the chip on his shoulder talking point and constantly going back to the everybody versus us mentality when all we want is for him to play better

It's been a combination of things but there's been more than enough Johnny Manziel shit that Baker has done

Lmao the ol game tape argument

He took everyone by surprise for 14 consecutive weeks last year while everyone was just scrambling doing their best to find any game tape

And all offseason teams spent solely preparing for Baker Mayfield because the game tape shipment from Guatemala finally came in

Look at this clip and look at OBJ's body language and ask yourself why he's upset

Yeah he needs to make that throw. Most of Baker's problems are mental right now. The double-pump and scramble - it's obvious he still doesn't trust his pocket because of last year, which has hindered his development substantially.

I still think Mayfield still has all the tools to be a good QB and this system does play to his strengths but he is going to have to dig deep within himself to get there. Unfortunately, I worry he may not have the mental makeup to get right. Lord knows we didn't help him last year at all.

My hope is that Stefanski and Van Pelt can get through to him by the end of the season. Had we had a normal off-season, I think this team looks much better than they did on Sunday.
