(It’s almost like there were a few of us saying Joe Schobert is a likable guy, generates turnovers compared to an average linebacker, but is overall not all that impactful.)

These same people now are also saying that, “damn, we really need some linebackers.” I know because I’m one.

Can't both be true?

Maybe a guy like Schobert doesn't make a lot of affirmative "big plays". He doesn't sack the QB, doesn't drop guys behind the LOS for losses, etc..

But he also is reliable in pass coverage, a sure tackler, and prevents the other team from breaking big plays or abusing us too badly underneath.

Yeah I mean Joe Schobert's production wasn't worth the money Jacksonville gave him, but he would also be the Browns best linebacker this season.

Both of those things are true.

I'm not quite sure the player who led the league in missed tackles over the past two seasons is someone I'd attribute "sure tackler" to.

Yes, but that was in a league where Takataka wasn't starting....

Calling him a "sure tackler" was probably overstating it. On the other hand, he had the 10th most tackles in the entire league last year, and had much better run-grades in the past than he did last year, so I think part of the missed tackles was him just being stretched thin in that defense with not much beside him after Kirksey went down.

Regardless, PFF did rate him as the 17th best linebacker in the league overall going into this season, and he had a top-10 rating against the pass. So even by their metrics, including missed tackles, he was above-average.

Where I really think he's missed is in pass defense.

Ward just can’t stay on the field. Sucks that Greedy is out again. I assume his prospects are good for week 4 though.

Has Ward been rules out for Sunday, or just not practicing?
