Cleveland Cavaliers Summer League 2019

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How can you give the Kyrie trade a pass after what we just saw this off-season. I don't care about it, but it was not a good trade. No way.

It's not a loss. Would you have rather had Kyrie and lose the finals in 5 or 6 games instead of getting swept? LeBron still walks with or without Kyrie on the roster. Kyrie walks because he wanted to go home. So how is it a loss? At worst we broke even. Celtics lost the trade badly.

Stray thoughts:

- Knicks fans should be at least mildly encouraged with R.J.'s last two games--he's at least finding ways to get points and the guy can definitely rebound.

- Coby White has been the most impressive rookie in Summer League to my eyes. I hope by the early stretches of the regular season it doesn't keep looking like he was the guy to take if you were happy enough with another combo guard.

- Jaxson Hayes is a damn good athlete; better than I thought when he was at Texas. And NAW keeps looking like a nice, smart player. Good for the Pels.

Coby White? How come?

He is rocking .430 TS and 13.5 per. He also looks less athletic and quick against better athletes.

I assure you that DG is going to be the better player.

Honestly, I don't think it's coaching. Coaching can only go so far.

There was a lot of selfishness on the court. People looking out for themselves.
That would apply if you have a boatload of talent, but these guys don't. Maybe they think they do? :chuckle:

That Bulls' roster will not be good for his development, either... They've got to find a way to move on from Dunn and maybe LaVine.

Garland will 100% be better, I agree.

Sorry. I like what altman has done so far
The irving trade wasnt bad. Altman had zero leverage
Tge sexton pick was solid at 8
Like the picks this year as well
Zero leverage? You mean with Gilbert breathing down his back? That draft pick was the leverage for Cleveland..thats what they wanted.

Not going to rehash the Kyrie Trade. It happened in the Lebron 2 era. Hindsight is 2020, but personally I think we did OK, and more importantly we fixed a lot with the second trade that dealt IT.

As for summer league gems. We are not playing draft picks because they are on the team either way. No good or bad news can be developed from SL, that we have not already gained (such as Windler) The remaining PT in SL can be used to evaluate as many players as possible in the crucible, so we can see if there is anyone worth picking up. Personally I think there have been better performers than Wade, but I am a hack, so I will defer to the pros. I also thought Phil Booth was pretty good, though we have a ton of guards already, and I was pleasantly surprised by Bolden.

Blossinggame was a find last year. I saw him live in a couple of games and it struck me that he seemed to know where to go/be on both sides of the floor. While he is not star material, I think he is on that cusp of being an NBA backup, and to that end could be tradeable for another asset. So I am OK with his 2way.

Kyrie threatening to have surgery and the timing he asked for a trade was bad. I think there would have been a bigger market if he asked out earlier. Teams had done their dealing at the draft and gotten their free agents. It's kind of like the situation OKC is with Westbrook right now. The good assets have been moved and there isn't cap space to absorb players. A large percentage of the league isn't tradable.

No, I think those are guys trying to make a highlight video to get a job in the NBA. Additionally, when guys who aren't NBA quality play like they think they are Superstars? You get extremely bad basketball.

Our best player was a guy who was dependent on the people around him creating for him and it was just a bad match. If our rookies were all healthy, I think the coaching would have looked a lot better.

Well I didn't catch the Hornets game :chuckle:

I still think he looked very competent as a scorer at every level--getting to the rim, pulling up in the mid-range, and that nice step-back three he pulled out a few times. You're right that he may very well look more ordinary physically against actual NBA players though.

It might even be a product of my own ho-hum expectations for him as I liked him just okay at UNC.

I only saw one game, but Coby White couldn't go around the scrubs on our SL team. He wasn't quick enough with the ball. That is a problem. I liked him before the draft, but that summer league game made me think he was no one special. Maybe I am wrong, but I was underwhelmed with his athleticism and his handle.

To me he looks like the run of the mill combo guard that you see a lot in SL. Streaky, at times looks good, but isn't consistent enough to be a good starter in the league. Doesn't stand out anywhere.

Probably fair, but I thought he looked just fine in that game and got by Long easily enough. He didn't shoot well from three and turned it over a lot but I thought he had some pretty nice passes too.

He's raw. He can grow as a player. I just thought he would stand out more.

If Kyrie truly was such a massive bargaining, why didn't some other team swoop in and offer us 4 first round picks for him?
