Cleveland Cavaliers Summer League 2019

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Only caught the highlights, but Barrett looks like he a had a nice final game against the Wizards: 21-10-8 and shot 7 for 13.

His outside shooting has a long way to go (7/30 from 3 at summer league) but at least Knicks fans have something to feel good about with him. And good for him, especially with a weirdly large chorus (online and in the national media) seeming to enjoy his early struggles.

Anybody been following Hachimura? How is he doing?

Summer league was a bust outside of Windler. Sign bolded to a 2way. Sign Blossomgame at the minimum. Guys like him
Yes it was, and some including myself think they really don't know how to put together a good squad.
There were other players they could have invited that were clearly better than that playground squad they picked.

They put together a squad of guys and tried to find out who is worth giving a two way.. No Garland, no Porter. Just enough Windler to discover we got a steal at 26.. We have already committed to these guys and we are not planning to get to playoffs this year, so the goal of summer league is about finding that rough diamond, such as Bolden that you can fashion into an asset..

I have been watching him. He is doing great.

First, defense - In fact his defense against big men has been good. Contests shots, makes the opposing person not have a great shot or alters their shots, stays in front of his man, and has made some great blocks. Rui needs to work when guarding quick guards but I believe practice and technique will help him.

Offense - He struggled in his first half in his first game during the summer but that was because he was a bit rusty and haven’t played in an actual game in awhile. Since then, his midrange, PnRs, finding the open spot, posting, hook shot in paint, and utilizes fake and uses his body to get a foul has been great. Really good in rolling to the basket. Rui did not get to shoot much 3s in college where he shot a lot from outside in high school. The Washington staff has tweaked his shot by working on his posture when getting the ball so he has a quicker release. He has been practicing 200 3s a day and showed off during his last summer league game when he made 2 3s consecutively which one he stepped in and shot with quick release.

He is confident in himself but is very humble. With consistent confident 3 as time goes on, I believe he will have a great year and his ceiling will rise with more experience.

Thank you.
I've watched a lot of his videos before the draft, secretly hoped the Cavs get him.
I think he's going to be a wonderful player.

Same here — I know a lot about him so feel free to ask anything.

My primary disappointment with the JR trade saga at this point is having not acquired Brandon Clarke, Grant Williams, or someone else with real defensive upside in that portion of the Draft. I understand that the Cavs were focused on Langford (who they couldn't get) and Porter (who they planned for without the JR deal) but if you had the assets to add one of Clarke or Williams too--why not?

It hurts to see Clarke, the internet's favorite prospect outside of the top 3, look predictably awesome in summer league on a different team. Especially when we had the worst defense in the history of the league last year and little defensive upside on the roster.

I don't really have a point here, I just like Brandon Clarke and wish we had him :(

Actually you did make a good point..one several others have openly spoken about , but the Cavs did turn down some offers, now what the specs on those deals were we don't know at this time.
Like most trade rumors I hope I don't see some time later that it was a doable deal.

I believe the Cavs could have had the #13 pick from Miami, if they were willing to take on James Johnson, and give up the #26 pick.

Also, Orlando was reportedly willing to give up #16 for #26, if the Cavs took back the Moz, who the Magic ended up stretching. However, Langford was already gone by that pick. If Langford was still there, I think there’s a good chance that deal happens and the Cavs would’ve then taken Okeke for Orlando at #26.

After that the focus turned to 2020 1st round picks, but the Cavs never found a deal to their liking.

Miami was not trading #13 for #26 for salary relief. They were focused on Tyler Herro basically all night and were ecstatic to get him.

To be fair to @sailfish, there was a buzz around that exact package shortly before the draft. Maybe that was a scenario the Cavaliers leaked or Miami was contemplating that trade if Herro went earlier.

Sure a lot was discussed around it, but I think we've seen through Miami's actions this entire summer, that they weren't heavily into giving up their lottery pick for dropping salary. The only asset they gave out for that was their 2023 lotto protected 1st--an asset I belive the Cavs turned down multiple times--and an asset they only used to get Butler.

I think they had a good idea they could get Butler in a S&T if he chose them instead of basically the impossible task that clearing the cap space would have taken---which would have basically gutted their team. Even if Herro was gone, I think they make a pick. That's why I think they basically never engaged the Cavs seriously on draft night. I think the only serious stuff in the mid-first round the Cavs were involved in during the draft was for #16.

I don't think Brandon Clarke was ever in the cards for the Cavs. We already have 3 rim runner types on the roster, all with questionable to no 3 point shot. I like what Brandon Clarke brings and how switchable he will be but adding another big who can't shot 3s just doesn't help build the roster.

Clarke really checks alot of the same boxes as Nance. I also think both need a solid 3 point shot so they can play at least split time PF to keep them from getting too banged up.

Brandon Clarke has been practicing shooting 3s because he knew in order to go to the next level he needs to consistently be a threat from the perimeter. His work ethic paid off and shot over 50% (small sample 5-9) from downtown during summer league. I personally like Clarke over Nance but I hope Nance can improve his offensive game.
