Cleveland Cavaliers Summer League 2019

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Brandon Clarke has been practicing shooting 3s because he knew in order to go to the next level he needs to consistently be a threat from the perimeter. His work ethic paid off and shot over 50% (small sample 5-9) from downtown during summer league. I personally like Clarke over Nance but I hope Nance can improve his offensive game.

I like Clarke too over Nance but the Cavs have lock down Nance for the long term. It would have been hard to bring in Clarke and waste a year of development when he would be the 5th or 6th big man on the depth chart at 23 years old at the start of the season.

Add on top of that the extra salary it would have taken to get the pick and the luxury tax. 40+ million to bring in a player that you can't give playing time immediately because we have 3 bigs that we want to showcase for trade.

Agree with you - it was just the way the structure we have on our team. I just wished somehow we got a talent big like Clarke or Rui or Williams. Just have to hope that Nance can really change on the offensive side and give more confidence to Zizic.

How do you guys prefer Clarke - who has never played an NBA game - with Larry Nance Jr. who has proven his value in the NBA over multiple seasons?

I’m not even a big fan of Larry, but it seems absurd that people prefer a guy drafted at a spot with around a 10% success rate over a guy with proven value.

That’s quite the projection. Nance is an NBA player, and a productive one who hasn’t maxed out yet. When all the young wings/pgs get their footing, he’s going to have a lot of opportunities.

As a player to develop, Clarke just fit our timeline better since he is almost 4 years younger. I also think athletically Brandon Clarke is the type of small ball 5 that can be switchable 1 thru 5. If his rim protection translate to the NBA, I think he becomes a real unique player that is real hard to find.

I also think Clarke just has the potential to be more versatile if he develops a solid 3 point shot. Even if Nance and him end up with similar games from beyond the 3 point line, Clarke just seem better built to be able to play SF if necessary than Nance would be. I think Clarke like Nance should be a PF long term but I think Clarke could play the role of a big wing if needed.

Nance might be the better player right now but if he wasn't locked down with that extension that starts this year, I would have been fine if the front office brought in Clarke to potentially take over Nance's spot. I just think he has the potential to give everything that Nance does and more.

Need a body for Training Camp. Is he good? No hes terrible like you said but some guys at this point might go to Europe for guaranteed money over going to the Wizards for training camp. When it comes to a bottom 5 roster spot for TC you take what you can get. We signed Macura who is pretty terrible in his own right.

They put together a squad of guys and tried to find out who is worth giving a two way.. No Garland, no Porter. Just enough Windler to discover we got a steal at 26.. We have already committed to these guys and we are not planning to get to playoffs this year, so the goal of summer league is about finding that rough diamond, such as Bolden that you can fashion into an asset..

I thought Windler couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn in the summer league?

Rare exception where a career bust breaks out and turns into a star. Zero people thought Oladipo was good. He exploded onto the scene in Indiana. Ball or Ingram could explode in NO and make NO better. But the day the trade happened zero people though the Pacers got the better end of it.

I was 100% sure that Oladipo was better than Bennett, before that draft. And I am not even paid to evaluate basketball talent.

It's not a loss. Would you have rather had Kyrie and lose the finals in 5 or 6 games instead of getting swept? LeBron still walks with or without Kyrie on the roster. Kyrie walks because he wanted to go home. So how is it a loss? At worst we broke even. Celtics lost the trade badly.

I never, in 1,000 years, trade with Ainge/Boston. I never, in 1,000 years, take IT off of Boston’s hands, before OR after the physical that made it clear that the hip injury was much worse than previously thought. It was so obvious that Boston was looking for a sucker to take him off their hands. And the whole idea of the centerpiece of the deal being a first-rounder from an improving team, whom we weren’t even motivated to sweep, was risky, at best. When Collin Sexton is the key return in the trade of an All-NBA player, you didn’t win a trade.

Kyrie trade gets a pass.
Putting a team around LeBron including those deadline trades that left us with Hood/Clarkson/Nance gets a fail.
Nothing he has done has made me think he is good at his job just yet.

He will be judged on how he builds this team, he won’t last that long if they don’t show improvement each season

Those deadline trades in 2018 looked pretty good, at the time. I remember Bron and JR being pretty amped. We absolutely had to get rid of Crowder and The Halfman - they were cancers. It didn’t become apparent until later, the extent to which Clarkson was a bonehead, Nance was brittle, and Hood was a turd. I forget the 4th guy we got at that deadline. Was it Hill?

Wasn't referring to draft. Was referring to Deepo after his tenures in Orlando and OKC do you read before you reply to posts? Literally had zero to do with him at the draft. In Orlando and OKC Deepo did not look good. Zero people expected him to turn into a star once he got to Indy. But he did.

I read your post. I knew what you were saying. I was just saying that I never really thought of him as a bust in Orlando and OKC. I mean, sure - it was a little surprising to see him turn into a 25 ppg scorer. But I thought he was an effective player in Orlando and OKC, especially as a defender. I’m still mystified as to why someone in the Cavs’ FO could have though Bennett would be the better player.

He was 38.5 from three in Vegas and 31.8 in Salt Lake.. had some good games before getting whacked.. point guards in summer league were not passers for the most part, but he made an impact, rebounded better than expected.. I think we are weak at 2/3 with Cedi the only sure thing.. So at the three barring a trade, we are looking at Cedi and Blossomgame.. not exactly the A team to crack into.. While I am sure we will see Collin and Garland in the back court at times, I think Colin with both Cedi and Windler on the wings, and Love with Nance up front, will open the court quite a bit..

I think TBT (the basketball tournament) has been more fun to watch than summer league was. I think this year's summer league was the least exciting summer league that I can remember. Not just for the Cavs but for the whole league.
