Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm sticking by my prediction that Matt Quatraro will be the next Guardians manager after Tito bids farewell. Possibly as soon as 2023.

InRe: Cody Morris...

Cody Morris is the kind of SP Cleveland turns into an incredibly useful piece of their rotation.. He throws stikes with all his pitches and is a presence on the hill.. In order to keep him on the hill with the pill.. a strategy needs to be created and executed:

-Having Morris begin the season as the long reliever while starting his transition to the rotation as the season approaches the ASB.. More innings are needed from more pitchers in April and May, thereby permitting a slow ramp up until he is fully ready to go 100 plus pitches and is, for all intents and purposes, stretched out. This is a role he has to buy into...
-When he does become a starters.. his innings need to be Limited 75 P's or four /five innings, whichever comes first. This could be the approach for the entire season, however, I'd like to see the gloves coming off in the second half of the 2022 season.
-If ST shows that Cody is an unstoppable force, then a six-man rotation needs to be considered. This flies in the face of the traditional approach Tino is accustomed to.. but, he'll need to adapt or die..
-Skip Morris's turn in the rotation for damn near any occasion. While not defining an innings limit.. limit the innings...
-And least and last is attempting piggybacking at the ML level.. good luck with that. Truth be told.. the depth of starters for the Guardians for the 2022 season portends at least consideration of a piggybacking approach..

Well see.

The MLB PA will be presenting, in person, more of an all encompassing rebuttle to the Owners offer from just a few days ago.. The Owners didn't show their hand w/r to earlier free agency, the sore subject of a penal tax for purposefully shying away from being fully competitive throughout an entire ML season and the all important revenue sharing issues, both local, national and cyber.. Compensation (both payroll and creature/culture comforts) w/r to free agency age for younger players is a sticky wicket the players will address.. but, have to tread lightly as the players association.. doesn't not represent the minor league players.. The players proposal could be a path to defining a monetary structure for all players in the end..

There are other competitive items.. like the implementation of an international draft and the elimination of the "unsigned" intent that currently has several skinny young latino kids in a bind.. This is an area that is aptly names.. the REAL WILD WEST.. other items include on field issues like a pitch clock, shifts, extra innings but, the most important one will be the determination of playoff construction.. or destruction, depending on which side prevails..

Should be an interesting weekend for both parties...

The relevant consideration for me is will the final deal give the lower budget teams a fair chance to compete? If they speed up significantly the time when a player can become a free agent that will be very bad for Cleveland as currently configured.

I along with virtually anyone following the negotiations have to believe some all encompassing means to free agency has to be a consideration for this CBA.. The Owner proposed an age of 29 1/2.. the Players may come back at 27 1/2.. the winners of the deal will be whoever is above or below 28 1/2.. It's not a bad idea except for the outlier who comes to the ML's as 21 year old who, would otherwise be a FA as of their age 27 season.. Some minor allowance for an early entry may be needed.. but would affect less than 2 % of these kids..

The dollar values being much higher.. makes sense too..

So we will have Gose for 1 yr .... time to trade him (deadline deal if not in hunt).

So if Nolan Jones ends up a star they lose him in about 4 years? And college picks are likely gone in 3 years? That seems very bad.

... another "outlier", I suppose.. it's hard to say how the CBA would handle 8-12 year journeymen returning to play..

...oh.. if the Guardians are NOT in the hunt.. absolutely a trade chip..
