Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We are changing our approach in player acquisition from tools to skills.

Can he command the baseball? Does he know how to pitch?

Can he make contact? Does he know how to hit?

“I think it starts with the guys you’re taking in the draft,” opined Haase, who was in the Cleveland system from 2011-2019. “Obviously, there some are high-upside guys, and some organizations pick those top guys and kind of say, ‘Go out there and pitch.’ They think they’ve got themselves more of a finished product. With Cleveland, it was more about picking guys that already had a good feel for pitching, and then implementing things that would give them little spikes in velocity. They were big on weighted balls, big on strength and conditioning. Basically, they’d take guys who already had good command and give them some more legitimate weapons to get hitters out.”

A good book on the subject The MVP Machine by Lindbergh. Many goofy ideas that Bauer brought with him are now mainstream.

honestly I can't wait until he's a Guardian
The true heir to Lindor. Too bad he'll have to be moved because of Amed Rosario, Arias, Freeman, and Jones are blocking SS, 3b, and 2b. Edit: forgot about Jose after he signs his extension that Bimbo told us about. Just not sure where he plays.

When and if Rocchio is ready to contribute in Cleveland there will be a place for him.

They put JRam in LF to make room for Lindor and then swallowed Uribes salary to make room for Jose at third.

Yeah I think there's a few others likely to get called up first, particularly Palacios (who may even start the year in MLB) and Arias (likely late June callup). Freeman is a possibility as well and is likely to beat Rocchio to the majors. Rocchio still has some work to do probably with his K/BB, but the quality of his contact seems on point.

If he is still in the organization when he is ready for the bigs, he will have a place on the roster and if he is better defensively than the others, they will move someone to a different position. I almost can see Arias to the OF if JRam gets extended...

When comparing Rocchio to Lindor, how do they stack up defensively? I understand that Rocchio's glove is highly thought of, but IIRC, Frankie's glove was supposed to be his strongest attribute, and even at the time he cracked the big leagues, his bat was not considered to be all that.

I'm very much a novice compared to most of you when it comes to baseball, but I could've sworn the sentiment on Frankie was that he'd be awesome in the field, but no one ever expected his bat to be anywhere near what it ended up becoming. If I am recalling correctly, then I don't think it's fair to expect Rocchio's bat to be anywhere near Lindor's just because his minor league numbers are comparable to Lindor's.

Does an extended JRam solve future 1st baseman issues?
