Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Interesting trade, especially timing. He maybe cut ... but has upside like Santos. Santos had a better spring so just curious why him vs Santos for 40 man (other than Santos is in reserve till needed). It also leaves just Straw, Mercado and Kwan as true OF with only Rosario/Clement OF ready (unless they call up Palacios until Naylor is ready). And, Tito said Rosario will also play SS this weekend (before trade). Also, Issue w Naylor is when is his start date on 10-day dl ... mlb lists it as 4/4 without a note of retroactive (but who knows).

From mlb.com last year ..
The appeal of Castro lies in his strikeout ability, which leans heavily on a fastball that sits in the mid-90s but can tick up to 97 mph. He also throws a slider, often as a strikeout pitch, and has a changeup that is still a work in progress.
"When I was catching him, it was pretty easy to catch, because you could always rely on his heater," catcher Jake Rogers told MLB.com back in Spring Training. "It cuts."
Tigers outfielder Derek Hill also offered up a scouting report back in Spring Training after facing Castro and getting a look at his pitches from his spot in center field.
"Everything he throws moves," Hill said. "You could see it from center field, just darting everywhere. If the catcher called three fastballs straight, they'd all do something different. But they'd hit the spot."

Personally - no...

Interesting WHIP # for last season but it appears he was struggling again this past spring

Gotcha, from what I can see, his numbers weren't bad until AA as a starter.... added to the Tigers roster and alternate site in 2020, cut after the season and Toronto picked him up after that in 21, but struggled this spring.

That's the last scouting report I can find on him...

Seems like a solid fastball-slider combo type with so-so control...

Now we know who Guardians were scouting for Tor all spring. Yet, in 4.1 innings ... 8 Ks, 3 BB ... but the kicker is 5 hits ... 3 of which were HRs ... Guess he hung a few

Caught the last half of the game tonight. Noticed we have Ichiro 2.0. Pretty cool surprise!

I have a feeling the is guy may turn out pretty dang good, only knock is little to no power. What a difference between him and Zimmer.

If we could only package Rosario and pcs for a power bay in LF or maybe Jones/Valera are the answer soon.

I have a hunch the new guy, will need some time with the pitching factory before he is ready for the pros...

I don't want to lose Amed as a hitter, but if we can get a legit LF/RF Bat, who plays a plus defense with a better bat than Amed, I am not going to be against it. Just losing Amed doesn't really help our proven MLB depth...

Though I personally feel comfy if we just put Kwan in the two hole and see what he can do... that would be a bit of a gamble, but I think he may be up for it..

Though I am curious who exactly is replacing Zimmer for Saturday lol
Probably will have 27 guys and then Castro might sit in the bullpen for a few days until Naylor is back.

Edit: From an si.com article on the deal: “He [Castro] will be added to the Guardians' active Major League roster in time for Saturday's game against the Royals.”

Interesting depth piece in Anthony Castro...
Can't help but think that maybe Cleveland's pitching braintrust sees something in Castro that is fixable. Ironically, he has performed better as a starter and has 3 quality pitches that he struggles to control. Can't say I'm excited other than being done with Zimmer, but I'm curious what Cleveland can do with Castro. He's a live arm with lots of natural movement.

We didn't need Zimmer anymore honestly... I think our CF depth is fine. So I don't mind taking a flier on Castro...

Hell no I don't mind seeing if they can work some magic with Castro. The arm is live and everything moves. From what I can tell he appears to be a very good athlete so maybe they can harness his stuff. Imagine getting something good for Zimmer! lol

Castro could turn into a warm, steamy pile and I'd still be happy with the trade. It was time.
