Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Progressive Insurance should do a "becoming your parents" commercial using old timers watching ESPN Highlights w/ baseball statistics (Batting average...stolen bases.. etc) versus the OPS+ and DRS and etc.. etc.. could be pretty funny...
You forgot fWAR.;)

Generally speaking.. when a home grown front office guy is given an opportunity for a promotion in another organization, the home team allows that guy the change with well wishes and NO COMPENSATION..

Sounds like this is the case...

...too bad.. the Cubs are loaded with young 'on the cusp of ML's' OF'ers.. but there are other ways..

I would rather see Carter Hawkins get the ChiCubs job if it means CLE can hold onto James Harris..
Losing JHarris is the bigger hit to the organization...

yep....give me a guy who puts the ball in play all day long over somebody who strikes out 175 times, hits. 220 and 35 hr's.

In the short term, its always tough to lose a FO piece. In the long run its a good thing.

In football, they often talk about coaching trees....

Sabin's, Woody Hayes', Paul Brown's.

Seemingly every year they lost an assistant, who went on to success. And seemingly they hired another one who was just as good. And none of those guys stopped winning.

Nobody talks about Rod Chudzinskis coaching tree.

Having former front office personnel in other orgs opens lines of communications that otherwise wouldn't exist.

I wonder if this hiring opens up trade possibilities with the Cubs.

Give me the player with the higher value. I don't really care how you get it done, as long as you get it done.

This is true to an extent.

But the player's skill set has to fit the roster of whatever team acquires him.

Positionally sure (and also handedness can make a difference) but what I mean is when you think of it in terms of tools/skills to play the same position I don't care much if you are bad at defense and good at offense or vice versa, or get your offensive production done through the means of power, patience, or contact. In the end what matters is the "WAR" (or at least what WAR attempts to get at). And I'd look at things more in terms of what you'd project the team WAR to improve by upon acquiring someone if they let you shuffle your roster up. For instance if we get a 1B only and DH only player, we'd be forced to stick Franmil in OF and that'd be bad.

Again, true.

Again with a caveat...

For years we've been watching an outfield full of guys who can play defense, but can't hit...or guys that can hit, but can't play defense...or guys that can only platoon...or guys that can't do any of the above.

We've gotten away with it, because Tito has been a genius at mixing and matching. But mixing and matching means an inordinate amount of AAAA OFs taking up 40 man spots. Now we can't afford to clog up the 40 man, due to the arrival of a tsunami of R5 eligible prospects.

Right now we have four OFs...Zimmer, Mercado, Harold, and Johnson...on the 40 man, none of which have proven capable of significantly producing at the MLB level. There isn't even a viable platoon to be made out of them.

We need to consolidate those four roster spots into two OFs capable of playing nearly every day.

We also need to consolidate the five MIFS currently on the 26 man roster into two starters and one util.
