Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The reps at Nike seeing this guy rock a majestic A’s jersey have to be ready to file a lawsuit

Sorry but you guys have evidently never watched him play. Watch him in 2022 and form your own opinions instead of dismissing mine outright.

I've watched him plenty. Maybe we just have different definitions of a diva?

Hey, I admit to being old school. In football, I prefer guys who score TDs act like they’ve done it before instead of playing juvenile games in the end zone. But that’s me and I readily admit that younger people enjoy the over the top celebrations. To each his own. BTW, I too wish the Guardians had players like Franco.

Ah yes, that's what it is.

I'd certainly prefer a team full of JRams, Klubers, Biebers, Omars, Thomes, Thorntons, Kips, Cookies, Sandys...on the field class acts who comport themselves with grace...but I'm not a 20 something.
What about off the field?

Growing up in the 50s and 60s, its hard to describe how reviled Ali was when he first came up and beat Liston...and proclaimed himself The Greatest.

And danced, and mugged, and refused to show any deference to anybody in boxing. Now he is universally beloved.

Times change. They always have, and they always will.

Thome was one of the earliest bat-flippers

Jose is still hated by some Twins fans for this

Kippy loves him some bat-flips too

Guys have done this stuff for awhile.

It’s exhausting, man. So much bitching and moaning about the team shop, crooked signs, social media activity from the team’s accounts, etc. It appears that the organization simply can’t do anything right among a vocal minority in the fanbase.
You nailed it with "vocal minority". The old adage that the squeaky wheel gets the grease seems appropriate here.

Depth lefties with options are the hottest commodity in baseball. Shouldn’t surprise anyone those 2 got grabbed.

I am not surprised doesn't mean I wanted to lose them...

Though I was kind of hoping someone would get Johnson since I think he needs a fresh start...

I mean, they lost 1 lefty in total on their 40 man…not exactly hurting after getting rid of those 2.

It isn't the point that we aren't hurting, although nearly everybody insists we need to bring in a LH reliever for the pen.

Its that we lost them for nothing.

It is inconceivable to me that, knowing since the 2016 tsunami of international signings, there was going to be a severe roster crunch after the 2021 season, the FO didn't address it by moving some of them.

Instead, the FO continued to acquire more prospects that made the problem worse.

We have now lost Perez, Mejia, Nelson, and Moss. Thats not something to shrug off. These are the type of young pitchers that this FO usually scavenges off of other teams when their FOs don't plan ahead.

I love this FO, and wouldn't trade it for anybody. But the one gripe I have had for years is that it consistently hangs on to prospects well beyond their shelf lives, and won't make decisions on them.

Now, not only have we given away four pitchers, we are faced with a roster full of minor league prospects and fringe players in their late 20s.

Players like Zimmer, Chang, and Johnson used to be worth something. Now we are hoping that we can spend money and/or prospects so that we don't have to see them again.

Every GM in baseball knows that we can't compete with the roster we have and that we can't play a dozen MIFs at one time. It would have been better to overpay than to give players away.

Why did the FO wait until it was backed into a corner and lost most of its trade leverage?

Now, I guess the FO doesn't want to over pay for a bona fide difference maker. Well, I wonder what we could have gotten if we had overpaid several years ago by trading Zimmer, Chang, Johnson, Bradley, and Mejia for a real live corner bat?

At one time, Zimmer, Bradley, and Chang were all top five prospects in our org....and given the prevailing wisdom, we wouldn't have traded them for Reynolds.

And if we don't move a bunch of these prospects, we will be saying the same thing in another three years about most of them.

This is not hindsight. Its what I've been saying for four years.

The Guardians didn't lose "them" for nothing.. they lost nothing. and every franchise knows this and partially why you seldom see prospects for prospects deals...

The rest of the comment is pretty much why being a major leaguer is so difficult.. If you can play.. you will.. if you can't you'll toil away for years and years without ever making a mark in the show..

Thoughts?..
