Collecting Obsessions

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What an amazing piece. I obsess over wrist watches (although my collection is very budget and only starting), but never really looked into the pocket watch side of things.

I read russian so I had to look into it a little bit. Says on your piece "supplier of the court of his majesty" which is apparently a unique title only the very best suppliers, manufacturers, artists etc received. Not the company, but it's owner, so when there was an owner change the new person and to achieve it anew. What a heritage for Pavel Bure watches.

Very new parts of history for me, thanks for sharing! Im going to look at some Pave Bure pieces now too, russian watchmaking is so rich with quality and heritage.

Do you have any other russian pieces? Wristwatches maybe?

I was incredibly pumped to find one in such good condition. One maybe sees one this nice once a year, and those go for a few grand.

That is really cool that you can read Russian! Yes, Pavel Bure was the go-to for the Tsar and the Court. The watches in gold were the most prestigious gift the Tsar gave to high ranking officials and diplomats. And I firmly think PB was the best of a group of really good Russian watchmakers. Henry Moser and Son was also very good.

The gold watches for, depending on condition and exact type, from $3500-$15,000.

The only other Russian piece I have at present is the modern Paul Buhre limited edition homage to the Tsarist watches in gilded silver. I mainly stick to Swiss wristwatches.

I may have a spare one if you are interested.

I also recommend this book:
And this book, since you can read in Russian:

For watch people: What are people's opinions on Rolex?

Overrated?

Got the Pavel Bure back from the watch repair shop where it went under routine maintenance.

He also cleaned it with some silver cleaner. Looks amazing for a 130 year old watch.

Don't actively collect anything, but when I was a kid I used to buy comics. Still in a box in my old closet at my parents house. Off the top of my head, Wolverine 1 through like 140(when I stopped buying) is there.

My mom in her retirement goes to estate/garage sales and buys boxes of post cards. Believe it or not this is a massive collectible market. She figures out the prices of them and puts them on eBay. Some of these things are worth hundreds each. Another odd thing about them, if they have been used, it doesn't impact the value. In fact, someone mailing a post card, the post office stamping it with a date mailed, is good because it 'proves' how old it is.

I have a nice basketball card collection. Collected since I was a kid. Sold some of my better items (including a complete 2013-14 Prizm set) for a few thousand on eBay last year. I'm WilyWestbrook0 over on SportsCardForum. Currently specializing in OKC Thunder and Cavs stuff, but have a pretty diverse collection.

That JLC Reverso would be the crown jewel in any collection.

Anyone else collect watches?

I feel like I need to branch out a bit more outside the Rolex/Omega/Breitling paradigm.

I am not rich so many of the German Glaschutte companies are not an option, ditto Patek and VC.

Any folks with experience with other Swiss mid-level types, like IWC, JLC, etc., or lower-mid level like Tudor or Tag?

Or American companies? Like Zenith, Hamilton?

Pocket watches are another discussion.

I don't collect watches but if I did I would spend a lot of time making sure the times were completely synchronized and then just stare at them

I collected comic books as kid too.

Had a lot of #1s in the era, which now are not worth much because they put out so many of them then preceding the big comic book collapse.

But I had some nice issues like Amazing Spiderman #299 and #300, the first full appearances of Venom, #361, the first appearance of Carnage, New Mutants #98, first appearance of Cable, the first few issues of all the original Image Comics lineup etc.

My crown jewel at the time was Spiderman #1 Platinum edition, never sold, given only to distributors.

I sold all my comic books when I was like 15. Now Imagine they are not as much as one might suspect, but still cold go for $5000 these days.
