As previously mentioned, his defense has been outstanding the last two games. Friday’s game against Brad Beal especially was eye opening.
You can say on offense he’s all about scoring, but if you are going to mention what he’s all about, you have to talk to talk about his improved defense.
From Fedor's column:

"In a move that would have been unfathomable last season, Beilein called on Sexton to pester All-Star Bradley Beal in Washington on Friday night.

Sexton matched up against Beal on 61 percent of the Wizards’ possessions. During that time, Beal, one of the league’s premier shooting guards, scored two points on 1-of-4 from the floor. Sexton also forced a pair of turnovers.

Two nights later, the Knicks starting backcourt, RJ Barrett and Frank Ntilikina, combined for 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting, also committing five of New York’s 21 turnovers.

“Just playing with heart, that’s all it is,” Sexton said in response to defending bigger players."

Bradley Beal's line against Sexton; 2 points, 2 turnovers. OMG.

31 points last night on 16 shots with ZERO turnovers. We needed it, too, because nobody was hitting 3's except him - the rest of the team was 3-for-20 from downtown. He also pulled up on a fast break when the layup wasn't there and dished it to Cedi for an uncontested 3.

Sexton is better at both ends of the floor this year and he's still only 20 years old and now is learning to play off the ball, which is where he probably belongs. People might think he's too small to defend 2's but look at what he's been doing with quickness and desire. Not to mention that whoever is guarding Sexton is going to be run ragged trying to chase him around when the Cavs have the ball, which will negatively affect his shooting on the other end.

Collin was pissed that Kevin Knox was selected for the Rising Stars team last year while he was left off and he took it out on the Knicks last night.

"I think what’s being underrated here is his growth from last year to this year with his defense." - Beilein on Collin Sexton

Sexton is one of those players that looks to have a near elite NBA skill (scoring) and is passable in a few other categories..... but all anyone wants to talk about is what he isn't good at. He's like the black Kevin Love on here. With the 8th pick, the Cavs got a guy who looks like he can be a 20 PPG NBA scorer and do so efficiently. There's only 20 or so of those guys in the league.

Everyone also speaks about Collin like he is 28. Think about how much better he is from game 9 of last year to game 9 of this year. He has yet to turn 21 and he's gotten noticeably better with decision making, shot selection, defensive effort. Shot 40% from 3 on 3.6 3PA as a rookie.....42% on 5.0 3PA on his fast start this year. He is a LIGHTS OUT NBA shooter when many people weren't sure he'd be an average one.

I think he has some short comings that will likely remain, like his passing vision will probably always be below average......but you can easily envision him being one of the best 6 players on a title team. If we continue to draft above that cut line with our first round picks, this team is going to be very very fun (and good), especially with this coaching staff.

He was 1 point away from his career high and he passed it for an oop to Tristan. He played really well with Garland last night, their best game together. 20 years old and guys can't stop him.

Betting against this kid is foolish

31-2-3 is about the most Sexton line possible. Dude is all about scoring the ball and that’s about it. LOL

You need dudes that can put in the biscuit in the basket. At least he seems to have one skill that he is good at. Hopefully he can at least become average in a couple different areas.

I think he has potential on D to be more than passable. I would not say he has elite ceiling there, but he has the speed and length to be a good defender. He certainly has the potential to annoy the people he is guarding. As he learns the right angles to take and grows on the defensive side, I think he will be considered an asset on defense, not a liability.

His defensive rating has already seen significant improvement (as has his offensive rating). His Net Rating is now positive. I think he will continue to make gains. The challenge on defense will be to see if he can get his defensive rating down to 100 and then on offense get his rating up to 110.

If he becomes a good defender, not just league average but a good defender, then his entire outlook changes. Like multiple all-star outlook and an easy starter at the 2 guard. At the moment, he's basically an upgraded CJ McCollum.

I have a feeling JB is getting to him to. I think Sexton is a guy that needs to be consistently challenged and I think Bielien is starting to understand how to push Sexton's buttons in the right way.

I chuckle at people on various sites doing a re-draft already for last year and in so many Sexton isn't even top 10. Below are several posts that don't even mention Sexton in their top 10-12. Has there ever been a young player more disrespected than Sexton? As a 19 year old he scored 17 pts per game (which was 3rd in his class) and shot 40% from 3 but didn't even play in the rising stars game. C'mon man!

1/2 - Doncic/Trae. Those 2 are obviously #1 and #2 or 2 and #1. This is not about them, dont mention them because it will derail the thread.

After that, you have Ayton, Bagley, JJJ, Carter Jr, SGA, MPJ, Mitchell Robinson, Huertet, Brunson, Shamet, DiVicenzo, Miles and Mikal Bridges and Aaron Holliday as best players.

3) SGA
4)Wendell Carter Jr
5) Ayton
6) Mitchell Robinson
7) JJJ
8) Miles Bridges
9) Bagley
10) DiVicenzo

JB was masterful at developing guards at Michigan.

For someone like Collin, that coaching hire was an absolute perfect match.

Beilein is one of the best coaches I have seen at being a "players coach" but still commanding respect from all his guys.

It's like he was created in a lab to be the perfect NBA coach......just his mix of demeanor, scheme, instruction.

Give him someone like Collin, with his skill, work ethic, attitude and I have no doubt he'll squeeze every ounce of talent out of him.

At this rate, I would not be totally shocked to see Collin hit all-star status/numbers next year. I’m excited to see Collin vs Kyrie. If Garland can start draining 3s consistently, as we know he is capable of, and Cedi improves his 3 shooting, that starting unit of Garland/Sexton/Cedi could be pretty scary offensively. PS. Nance was a BEAST on defense yesterday.

I didn't know jack or shit about Sexton when he was drafted, but found an article about him that was a real eye-opener. Probably a good time to post it again;

The Maniacal Work Ethic That Made Alabama's Collin Sexton a Five-Star Recruit

...Sexton had a schedule at Pebblebrook High School (Mableton, Georgia). He'd rise before 6 a.m. to pump iron and run lung-busting conditioning drills. Then it was off to school (he carried a 3.7 GPA) before heading to practice with either his high school or AAU team. After practice, he'd go through a skill-focused workout that saw him repeat different dribbling, shooting and lay-up moves until he could execute them in his sleep. The session couldn't end until he'd drained 300 jump shots. Sexton never shared these grueling workouts on social media, because he never had interest in creating an account. No Instagram, no Twitter, no Snapchat, no nothing. "You can't follow me on social media. Don't have it. In my opinion, it's a waste of time. Likes won't make you better at anything," Sexton wrote in a piece for The Player's Tribune.

He also had a 4.0 in the fall semester at Alabama. Very smart, incredible work ethic.

There's been other stories about his insane work ethic post-draft with the Cavs, to the point where they had to tell him to get out of the gym. Maybe someone else can find it and post it again. The number of shots, etc., he was practicing each day was nuts.

He is already putting up borderline all-star numbers.

If SGA is 3 or 4, wasn't it a mistake to pass on him?

With the reports out that he didn't want to play for the Cavs not sure how you can draft him. Is he really that much better than Sexton? Honestly, in a re-draft Sexton is challenging everyone except for Doncic, Ayton and Young. Not saying he's better than the rest but he's not "clearly" worse.

People harp on SGA way too much. I get it. I like him, too. But if the only person we regret not choosing over Sexton is a player who made it clear he specifically did NOT want to come to Cleveland? Then we probably made a nice selection at #8 that draft.
