Just to clarify, they can only do a sign and trade before he signs an offer sheet. Once he signs one, you can't. So really, if his agent and a team come to an agreement, there is no reason to involve the Cavs at all. Very unlikely the Cavs would match an offer that they weren't willing to offer on their own.

Absolutely, but I am not sure Sexton wants to have only 5 teams he can go to that can pay him 20M a year. OKC and Detroit are the only 2 that really might want him and have that much space.

Well, if we would be moving him as part of a multi-team Simmons deal, that would mean we'd be moving Sexton for salaries rather than expecting a team to pick up him into empty salary space. So he could really go to anyone willing to move whatever matching salaries the various deals would take.

I wonder if this will motivate Sexton to have a different mentality of what he wants his game to be and what makes him most marketable in free agency. I think he has bought in to being the SG in the Sexland tandem but that didn't get him the extension he wanted. I wonder if he takes a different approach to his game because of it.

JB said winning. Collin may think scoring 30 a game will get him what he wants, but that is not what the front office and coaching staff have told him. They told him they want him to play team ball and look for his open teammates and play defense. I hope he does plan on gettinga max contract, but not just for scoring. For thinking the game, and playing the right way for his teammates.

His ability to capitalize on steals and blocks from the front court and his ability to drive and kick should be his focus, as well as giving the effort on d he does on O.

Slightly off topic...

But the Simmons situation really seems to be coming to a boil.. Philadelphia better start dropping their asking price because the further this spills into the season the more it negatively effects their team (look at what happened in practice today)

I'm posting this here because we all know if the Cavs were to trade for Simmons then Sexton is going to be one of the main parts of that trade.

Sexton/Love/Okoro + future 1st for Simmons... I'm gonna get roasted on here for it but I say yes to it!

Simmons/Mobley/Allen defensively makes me drool... don't you worry about how we won't be able to shoot the rock. That doesn't matter! We'll hold other teams to under 20 points.
Simmons situation in Philly is untenable to say the least...they have to get him out of there.
This is the perfect situation for the cavs to be involved in. They could either make a play for Simmons if they think he would
somehow fit here or they could get involved as a third or even fourth team in a mega deal.
I'd rather deal Sexton now than wait until later in the season. I think its in the best interest of the team to
send him out now if they can get a good value back. I can't believe Philly can hang onto Simmons any longer.

While,I think the roster is slightly better than the last two seasons. I don't want to hear JB say anything about winning when we still got a roster full of G-leaguers,injured prone players and nonshooters on this team. Don't let me start about his offense where he always camp Okoro and Collin behind the three-point line, there's never no movement on offense;somehow, the point guard slow's down during a fastbreak(hopefully,it geys fix this season),players including Collin make wide open shots and etc.

It seems to me that JB puts all his energy on defense rather than both. I understand,he's a defensive mind coach but you can't neglect the other side either...imo...

He could have atleast gotten a offensive coordinator on his staff.

Absurd overpay.

Chasedown podcast was really good today. They had Sidney Lowe on there and he was talking about how that movement off the ball is one thing they are focusing on. Saying Garland penetrates and gives the ball up, but he needs to relocate to the 3 pt line. Right now he is just crowding the paint.

I think they are aware of this. It is something players do like watch the ball while it is in the air that is hard to break the habit.

Hopefully,Rubio can be the leader this team needs. He seems like a guy that's not afraid to speak his mind..

Maybe they didn't pay Sexton now because they want to have flexibility if a better offer to trade him still on his current deal comes up, but it seems unlikely imo since they had all summer to do that, so unless it has to do with waiting for other players to be available for trades part of the way into the season I don't think not paying him a massive contract now has anything to do with not wanting him as a Cav.
I think it has everything to do with waiting to see if Garland takes the next step because if he doesn't and Sexton does, the latter is the one they will pay next summer.

I dont see how Sextons value went up at all so I dont think it is a perfect situation and they need to let Sexton increase his value before they shop him again if in fact they really see no point in keeping him. I think they wanted him to stay at a number they could more easily manage and since his camp intentionally asked for a figure they knew the Cavs would not agree too, it signifies Sexton doing Sexton and betting on himself more than anything. I admire his confidence and think he will in fact get paid next summer and it will probably be the Cavs that pay him.
If they want to trade him after another season that is better than last season like every one of his seasons have been I would be shocked.
I dont know who wants Simmons either tbh

I think these agents steer a lot of these guys the wrong way. I imagine the Cavs probably offered Collin in the neighborhood of $90 million dollars, that's a wild number to turn down. That bet on yourself mindset is incredibly short sighted, you're in the NBA and you have a team offering you millions guaranteed, you already won. Turning down that kind of money is crazy to me, you risk getting injured or finding yourself in a Dennis Schroder like situation and maybe never come close to getting that kind of offer again. And for what, for the hope to make a couple more million a year?

Collin is not just “betting on himself” - he’s betting there are teams out there with cap space to sign him. There’s a ton of downside and not much upside for players if they make that kind of bet.

There is some flexibility in waiting. I think there is some uncertainty if the Cavs really want him or to use him as a trade asset. He can still be used as a trade asset this year but I'm not sure a team is trading much for him without seeing if he will sign long term with them. If the Cavs make him a sixth man this year, he can shop to find a starting job and starter money.

There is certainly downsides to not signing an extension but a player can get an extension and get shipped off to Detroit like Blake Griffin did.
