Very happy for Sexton to represent tonight and played well

Looking forward to Sexton for rest of the season and how he adapts and continues to play with his passing, finding open man, taking good shots, and playing as a team especially with young guys together.

I'm very surprised at his response when asked about Beilein. Sexton isn't really too media savvy and doesn't mince his words well, but this is not really a ringing endorsement...

"Coach Beilein, he's adjusting to us, he's really good. But he's adjusting to the NBA game just coz like he's been in college for 20 something years so... And he's won at that level so it's hard to adjust right now, but he's trying to figure it out".

I don't know, I'm surprised. That's not too positive imo, or am I reading it wrong? Starts at 2:52.

No, you got it right..

I could see Beilein actually saying that stuff to the players. Taking ownership of the loses and how he is adjusting to the NBA and the team. It could be part of the whole over all message about trying to develop as a team.

Luka is absolutely a better defender... with that said:

1) Collin has potential to be better than Luka, but it will require him defending other short guards and getting better as an off-ball defender. Luka’s defensive rebounding gives him an inherent advantage

2) Basketball-reference’s win shares is based on BPM - which is a star that uses box score stats to predict future performance. It’s a very consistent stat, but as far as predictability goes, Bayesian RAPM models tend to be much better because they use both on-court/off-court performance and tracking data, and then they regress for teammates. These stats all have Trae Young as they worst defender in the NBA, and some even say he’s the worst of all-time, so I don’t buy for one second that he’s better than Sexton. Those BPM stats prioritize things like steals and not actual defensive performance.

I can get behind that. For sure. Hope it's this and not some vet/media driven narrative Sexton picked up too.

All being said, it was funny to watch him move around without the ball in his hands in the Rising Stars game. When he did have it, he did make the best of his time for the most part.

Coach, We’ve Got 82’: Cavaliers’ Collin Sexton Talks Beilein, Pippen At NBA All-Star

Mtn Dew Fans Closer Than Courtside At Courtside Studios During All-Star 2020

CHICAGO, IL - FEBRUARY 15: Mouse Jones, Spice Adams and Collin Sexton at MTN DEW Courtside Studios ... [+]

Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton was sitting on a small sofa at Chicago’s Blind Barber on Fulton Market, just in front of a speakeasy-style lounge that had been set up by Mountain Dew, when Bulls legend and Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen strolled in, wearing a sharp gray tracksuit and black-rimmed glasses. He sat down with Pippen for a bit of banter.

“It was cool, it was an old-style barbershop, just talking,” Sexton said. “I got to meet Scottie which was cool, real cool. First time meeting him and I was definitely a fan of his. Getting to talk with him, that was cool, in that barbershop setting. You can talk about pretty much anything in the barbershop.”

It was the highlight of what was a strange All-Star weekend for Sexton, who was invited to be part of the U.S. team in Friday’s Rising Stars challenge, but only after he was originally snubbed for the honor—despite averaging 19.8 points, fourth among rookies and sophomores in the NBA. He was given a spot in the game only after Miami’s Tyler Herro backed out with an injury.

“I was shocked, definitely,” Sexton said of the original snub. “But it all worked out OK in the end. It’s an honor to be here. But I thought I had done enough to get there the first time. I didn’t make it last year, either. So, I don’t know why.”

That was to start the weekend. By the end of the weekend, a report from ESPN emerged that the Cavaliers’ John Beilein was weighing whether he would continue on as coach of the team. Sexton didn’t know that when we talked but even then, he sounded lukewarm, at best, on Beilein’s fit in the NBA.

“You know how he is, he is very detail-oriented and it’s detail, detail, detail,” Sexton said. “He loves details. And he always wants us to make sure that when we are out there, we are giving it our all. College coaches, you know how they are—they want you to go 1,000 percent every second of the day. He’s been in college for 20 years, more than that. We’ve had to tell him, like, ‘Coach, we’ve got 82 (games), we can’t kill ourselves.’”

Sexton also talked about the adjustment to playing alongside rookie point guard Darius Garland. For most of his basketball-playing life, Sexton has been a point guard but after Cleveland used the No. 5 pick in last year’s draft on Garland, Sexton has had to adjust his role.

“It’s an adjustment,” he said. “We’re both trying to understand our spots and understand where we’re going to get our shots from just because we are both on-ball, ball-dominant players. We’re definitely starting to understand it and moving in the right direction with that.”

Sexton was one of a string of NBA players and Chicago celebrities who made appearances at Courtside Studios, a three-story Mountain Dew build-out that was open for fans on the corner of Morgan and Fulton Market. For three days over All-Star weekend, it drew players like Sexton and legends like Pippen, but also Joel Embiid, Myles Turner, Jaren Jackson Jr., Coby White and WNBA All-Star A’ja Wilson. Designer Don C sat down for a Q-&-A and rapper Lil’ Baby performed on the third floor.

Sexton also had a sit-down with former Bears lineman and TV personality Spice Adams for on the top floor of Mountain Dew’s installation.

Zion Williamson, one of Mountain Dew’s national ambassadors, stopped by to surprise two customers at the Blind Barber who had agreed to have a “Z” shaved into the side of their heads, as Williamson does.

“We wanted it to feel not like a big, huge warehouse,” said Erin Chin, Mountain Dew’s Director of Marketing. “We wanted people to feel like they could come in and connect with things, talk to people, talk to the players. The barbershop, the performances spaces, the stages it is very small and intimate. It has been good, for the people visiting but for the players and talent, too. It is a relaxed atmosphere.”

Sexton welcomed that—a chance to relax and enjoy basketball in a season that has had some ups and downs, though with the Cavs sitting on a 14-40 record, probably more downs than ups.

“It’s been busy, it’s been amazing,” Sexton said. “I wasn’t expecting to be here just because of what happened. But I got here, Mountain Dew brought me here and I love it. Just being able to interact with the fans in this place and all weekend, I love that.”

those other forums are crazy! I like how its Toronto fans that do most of the bad-mouthing about the Cavs. IIRC, they were the skid mark of the east for years lol.
It took everyone on the Warriors team to blow their knees for them to win that championship.

That's what happens when you're continually knocked out of the playoffs by the same team. Wizard fans were very similar during LBJ's first tenure here as well.

All being said, it was funny to watch him move around without the ball in his hands in the Rising Stars game. When he did have it, he did make the best of his time for the most part.
What was funny was watching him race up the court after an opponent miss, be literally 15 feet ahead of the field, stand under the basket waving his arms like a madman (still unguarded) while the other guys calmly dribbled around aimlessly, almost strictly looking for their own shots. That game was an embarrassment to anyone who has ever played basketball on any level above rec league.

As for Sexton's performance, if anything can be derived from that shit-show ... it was pretty clear he belonged on that court. His competitive fire never seems diminished, regardless of the stakes.
