I don't even know what a penalty is in hockey.

Seriously.

I admit to some band-wagon jumping here. I've put the games on of late, and it's fun to watch. I just wish I knew the rules. Icing? No clue. I turned that shit off in my old Nintendo days.

I sit there and think, "Oh, that looks like a penalty." Nope "That's gotta be a penalty." Nope.

So, I have no clue. It's still fun to watch right now.

I was in Canada over the holiday and the excitement they had for CBJ was pretty remarkable. I made sure to rep some CBJ gear in Calgary and the Canadian hospitality was on full display...while they may not have all of Cbus' attention yet, they definitely have the die-hard NHL fan's attention.

Icing occurs when a player sends the puck from behind the red line at center ice, all the way to his offensive zone (the goal you're trying to score on) past the second red line in line with the goal without any player touching the puck.

It's penalty because it's basically stalling and it kills the flow of the game. It results in a face off near your own goal. However, when you're defending a power play (when one of your guys are in the penalty box) you're allowed to do this to kill time while you're short a guy.

Offsides is when you pass the puck to someone that's ahead of the blue line before you yourself cross the the blue line closest to the goal you're trying to score on...It's so you can't just hang out right by the goalie and cherry pick.

That also means that when your team has the puck on the side of the goal you're trying to score on, if the puck crosses the blue line, all of your teammates must come back and touch the line before you can pass to them. That's why you often see two guys defending the blue line trying to keep the puck from crossing it and going between the two blue lines.

I had to look up youtube videos of the rules to understand penalties. They're pretty simple and once I did it made it more fun to watch.

So why is this team doing so well when previous iterations were so bad?

A lot of young talent responding well to a no-nonsense coach and goalie Bob (and the rest of the team, for that matter) have been healthy all year.

Put me in the group of people that really doesn't understand the game too much, but I've always liked hockey. I watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs every year, or at least the games I can catch. I just never took the time to really get in-depth and understand the nuances like I do baseball, basketball, and football.

Always followed CBJ loosely, as in check box scores, catch a couple games here and there. But I guess you can call me a bandwagoner because I've never really called myself a true fan but am now anxiously trying to catch up on NHL knowledge and follow them much closer. :chuckle: That's what winning does, I s'pose. I always told myself I just didn't want another dumpster fire team to root for, but with the Cavs and Indians, and now CBJ, times are a-changin'.

Blue Jackets could set the winning streak record in Columbus on Saturday. Checked the prices - cheapest ticket is $100. Normally it's like $20 lol
They have to get through Washington on Thursday first.

Jackets gettin' whooped 4 nil heading into the 3rd period. Barring a miracle, they'll fall 1 win short of tying the 17 game winning streak record.
