Source: WHO daily reports, numbers are deaths inside china/deaths outside china, bold date china changed from needing a test to confirm to basing it off a doctor's diagnosis, so number includes prior uncounted deaths.

daily WHO reports are here

Not sure about now, but I was searching on Twitter weeks ago and even earlier this week and it looks really bad over there.

I've always been more of a Dos Equis guy.

Not the Dos Equis guy, obviously. That guy is awesome. But a Dos Equis guy.

These are the official WHO feb 8th update numbers. The number of new deaths each day keeps increasing in china, but so far there has only been one death outside of china.

Globally
34,886 confirmed (3419 new)

China
34,598 confirmed (3401 new)
6101 severe (1280 new)
723 deaths (86 new)

Outside of China
288 confirmed (18 new)
24 countries
1 death

There are some suggestions on the internet that things are much worse in China than the official numbers, I'm not sure how believable that is since the death toll outside of china is so low.
Information quality is low.. we know there was a shortage of test kits.. so the reports are still suspect.. but we can say it's beating SARS.. at the current growth rate we would be looking at a billion people by end of April.. but I would guess the steps already taken, will slow things down..

growth rate is below initial projections I saw, which is good, because those numbers were pretty scary (projected 7546 deaths by today vs 723 that are reported) . But who knows how accurate the data is.

I think China are under reporting the number of cases but the actual amount of deaths could be right. I think they are doing so because they want to scare their general public into staying inside and quarantined to stop the spread.

I have a friend in Chengdu, China. He was on a planned long multi day bike trip when the outbreak happen. His plan was to get to a certain point and take a train back. They shut down all modes of public transportation so he had to ride back multiple days to get back to his car. He said the only good he could get was at gas stations because truck drivers were the only ones on the road. He got turned away from multiple hotels/motels because they didn't want outsiders in the town. He even had policemen tell he wasn't allowed into towns.

Now that he is back in Chengdu, he said he is on quarantined from work but can go out and get food etc. He has to take his temperature twice a day and work from home for 2 weeks. His co-workers are all working from home too.

He has a friend in Shanghai and he said everyone is basically on quarantined. They are given tickets to allow them outside twice a day.

I find it kind of terrifying, really. It's an outbreak in a country that suppresses info in and out; I simply don't trust any of their numbers. China will and does lie to save it's image. It almost has to be worse than advertised, regardless of test kits being available or not.

And really, this sounds like the hell virus we have been waiting for- airborne, long apparent latency period, highly contagious, lack of immunity... This is what they thought SARS was gonna do. This just might be the new influenza- an annual killer.

Tesla factory in Shanghai is opening back up Monday.

My friend said most of his co-workers were schedule to go back last week but they pushed it to Feb 10th. I think anyone who had left the city, wasn't allowed to come back into work for two week from when they got back. The earliest my friend can go back into work is the 14th.

I wouldn't be surprised if they slowly get the factory back up and running over a week or two period. While only allowing the people who live close to the factory to work initial. I saw a report from the BBC showing that Shanghai has basically turned into a ghost town, that was 2 days ago.

thanks for the info.

Your friend works at the Tesla factory?

No he works for some hydraulic parts manufacturer in Chengdu but they are getting instructions from the government on when they can open and who can come to work. I wouldn't be surprised if all companies are operating the same way.

He also said there are check points on the roads and in the cities.

This will turn out not to be that big of a deal.
That's likely.

The scary part is, we don't know. People keep saying Coronavirus is nothing because the flu is deadlier. Well, we know that come March/April, influenza season dies off. We don't know how the coronavirus will act and that's why we are taking all of these precautions to limit and eradicate it as soon as possible.
