I dunno, man.

Look, I understand why they've kept Mobley out this long. That's how the league works these days. Future franchise player chips a fingernail, he's missing four weeks "just to be sure". People's jobs depend on making it look like they're doing everything in their power not to endanger the golden boy. That's what it really comes down to.

But basketball is just too unpredictable. You can keep a guy out for ages, making sure that he's absolutely 100% without any doubt when he finally returns... and then he gets injured again on a freak play within the first 5 minutes. There are limits to how much you can control this stuff.

15 years ago, they'd have kept Mobley out for 3-4 days and after that he'd have played with a bunch of tape on his elbow, or a brace. This is a guy whose main impact right now is changing shots, just keeping the interior defense together. You can't tell me he couldn't do that playing with a slightly sprained elbow.

I'm sure Mobley himself has been itching to play from day one. But we all know you don't control this stuff yourself unless you're a superstar.

I think the 4 weeks was always an aggeration to take pressure of getting Mobley back in, but even15 years ago he is out 10 days or so because it was his shooting elbow and easy to reagrivate.

If this was the playoffs, that is a different story. I get your point, but sprained elbows take time to heal so they dont reagrivate. But you are right, sports and injuries can be very unpredictable.

I've been playing softball with a sprained knee. 5 months ago I thought I'd need a week, two tops. In that 5 months, I've been playing much worse than I otherwise would and have not healed

Evan, Baker, sit em all

He's just a few days removed from practicing left handed, isn't he?

No sense in aggravating it, it could linger the rest of the season easily. You can't play and not put stress on your elbow. Any dunk, bracing against a post player, blocking a shot...all of those things could aggravate it.

Don't bring him back until it's fully healed. One re-aggravation is all it could take to derail a young player's confidence and career. Especially on offense, where he was just starting to find his rhythm.

Whenever they bring him back, he’ll be fully healed. I have zero reason to believe otherwise.

Come on now. Mobley is not getting this type of treatment because he's a dude with a slighty sprained elbow. He's getting it because he's the future franchise cornerstone. Normal rules don't apply because everyone's terrified of getting fired if it turns out they mismanaged him. So they're taking absolutely no chances.

However, as I said above.... you can only do so much to keep a player healthy and safe in this league. And I'm not sure it's always the best option to panic and shut a guy down for a month if something does happen. Being out there on the court, even on a minutes limit or in a different role, always has its benefits. Particularly for a guy who's just learning the NBA game.

People play with sprained elbows, bruised knees and twisted ankles all the time in this league. You always hear about some body part "bothering" a guy for weeks (or months). It's a fast-moving sport, stuff happens.

I'm not saying we should be purposefully endangering a prized top pick, but as a fan, I guess it's hard for me to come to grips with the "losses don't matter, Mobley does" line of thinking. It's based on the fallacy that you can predict and control the future, and you know how a guy's career is gonna go.

You can't, and you don't.

Mixed feelings. This kid is the franchise. They need to be careful with him & not rush him back. I’m sure he’s chomping at the bit to get back out there, but it hasn’t even been 2 weeks that he’s been out and this was reported as a 2-4 week injury.

Gonna love watching him again, but would rather have him sit against this sorry Magic team.
Agreed. We don’t need him against Orlando and can win that one with a patchwork lineup. Why are they rushing to get him back in the lineup? The only thing that makes sense is they legit want make the playoffs this year, at all costs. With Mobley, the Cavs are a playoff team & potentially a 4 or 5 seed.
