Damyean Dotson Welcoming Committee

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Seems as simple as this:

If he hits 36%+ from 3P, doesn’t overdribbles/stifle ball movement, hustles on both ends, and communicates on defense, he’ll end up playing some useful minutes and occasionally having an impact.

If he can’t hit an efficient rate on 3P or sees this as an opportunity to break, become a hero, go into Clarkson mode, or be lazy, he’ll be sitting on the end of the bench until he’s traded or released.

I vote "B".

I mean yeah thats pretty spot on. Go and look at his 1st 3 season stats and its actually very similar to Dotson across the board. His season 4 is what I'm hoping Dot finds here. Increased minutes and better shooting %'s with the more consistent role (Afflalo got 33, which Dot wont get but I'm hoping he can get a consistent 20-25). Afflalo topped out at 18 PPG and I was thinking Dot's ceiling is 20.

In terms of playing style the difference is that Afflalo was more known as a mid range shooter, and Dotson more of a 3 Pt specialist (44% from 3 in college senior year, and I can't stress enough his 45% in his only 20 game stretch last year where he was an everyday rotation player). Afflalo was also known for his strength, where Dotson more so speed/quickness. But both above average athletes, good shooters, good on defense, unselfish, high IQ, serviceable off the dribble. It's a good comp.

That's a whole lot of Aaron Afflalo. I'd be interested to hear from some of our Knicks fans about that comparison @ACisKING and @dhutch307

Aaron Afflalo was one of those dudes that I used to beg The Cavs to acquire when we had LeBron. he would've been so good next to him. Just like Wilson Chandler and Trevor Ariza.

No way he gets 20-25 minutes on the same team as Sexton, Garland, Porter, and Delly. I think he's better than Exum, though. But if Garland takes his game to the next level as I think he will and Porter continues to develop I can't see Doton breaking into the top three who should each get 32 minutes. I see him more as a situational stopper that can come in to guard a perimeter scorer on a key possession.

Or if Garland is "meh" (50/50 in my book) or Porters offcourt stuff affects his PT ( likely), Dotsun gets minutes..

Delly is not expected to be in the rotation. He will be an insurance policy for injuries. I do believe Porter could be looking at a suspension, so that immediately opens up an important role for Dotson early on. What he does with the opportunity will dictate his playing time for the remainder of the season.

Do you think he will be suspended for the gun charge or the skirmish involving him, his sister and another women? Seems like both are questionable for a suspension.

The team can impose a suspension and counseling to start the season, and I expect them to do it. The whole KPJ fiasco was very similar to Delonte wilding out in the off-season, and I'm sure the Gilbert family is still trying to figure out if they could have done more for him.

Whether or not he helps is gonna hinge a lot on his defense, IMO. There are few players who're solid defenders but average very few rebounds/steals/blocks...they exist, but they're very rare. Delly is one such player, and for him the secret is his leadership and outlier basketball IQ. What's Dotson's secret? Or is he just an energetic-but-inept defender?

Lol, someone's going to have to explain to me what you're all smoking with this Matthew Delladova love. Last time I followed that dude was your playoff run when Kyrie was out and Lebron was going 1v5. I do remember being generally impressed with his tenacity.

But then I just looked at his stats in the past few years. Holy God I take back what I say about Kevin Knox being the worst player in the NBA.

Hustle can only bring your team so far...... Which is a meaningless point because Dotson is full throttle 100% of the time. With his much superior athleticism I can't see what Delladova could possibly give you that Dot couldn't

We always have a soft spot for our effort guys. The fact that he was a part of the championship team has amplified that. He plays with hustle and plays within the structure of the team. At this point in his career it's more about him working with the younger guys and the coach having someone on the team that he can always plug in for minutes to teach the younger guys.

At the end of the day, not a make or break signing, but he is a heady player that works at the end of the bench when your team has a bunch of young guys in the back court who need to continue to develop a feel for the NBA game.

He has been the Cavs best development coach since he was a rookie. Young perimeter players from Dion Waiters through Darius Garland talk about how Delly helped them understand the position.

Last season was especially bad if you just look at the stats because of the John Beilein trainwreck. Delly was off to a rough start shooting after changing his shooting form over the summer, then in early October he tore ligaments in the thumb of his shooting hand. Sexton and Garland were so lost trying to run Beilein's system that Beilein kept throwing Delly on the floor for 25 minutes with half a shooting hand. They finally brought in Exum so that Delly could heal up.

Right when he was healthy again and Beilein was gone, the league shut it down. Delly is probably just the 15th man and mentor role now, but his shot shouldn't be that bad again.

They brought back Dellavedova to be a mentor for Garland,Sexton and KPJ...Every,timeout you see Dellavedova talking to one of them.

When,he's on the court Dellavedova is putting them in the right spot.
