Declining interest in Basketball

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It’ll go away. Everything goes away with sports.

Remember how mad everyone was at Colin Kaepernick and his big bad Nike commercial this time last year?

What about all the times everyone was done with sports because of the greedy owners/athletes after strikes?

Nobody will remember this in a year.

I don't know. This is a bit different than any of those situations given the legitimate financial fallout that could happen as a result.

The Colin K thing was pretty simple. As long as the owner's colluded to keep him out of the league then the story was going to die. The strikes always disappear once everyone comes to terms.

The difference with China is that if they just decide to ban the NBA, that has long-term implications on the salary cap, the players pocketbooks, and companies associated with the NBA like Nike, Under Armour, Adidas, etc. That's the main reason it'll continue to get talked about.

One big difference with Colin K and the NFL...a large portion of the fan base was offended by what he was doing and were pretty loud when speaking out against it. On the other hand, the NBA has kind of hung their hat on being the "Social Justice League." Not only have they allowed the players to use their voice, but they've actively supported them doing so even when it wasn't necessarily popular.

Colin Kaepernick still doesn't have a job though. SO clearly that hasn't gone away.

And yea, for a lot of people it will. But there are those, like my dad, who never let it go. When the Browns left, he sold all of his Browns gear. He still owns none. He still doesn't watch on Sunday. He gave it up and never came back.

I know a fair number of guys like that as well.

I think that’s great. If you want to stand by a decision permanently because you feel that a sport isn’t worth your time then you’re probably right!

I have said on here that football probably shouldn't be played by anybody given the long term repercussions but that I understand why its entertaining. I do think that long term, people will grasp the dangers of it but I think that could take decades.

There are always going to be fans to replace the handful of fans who give up on a sport or claim they’re giving up on a sport. Whether that’s in America, China, Japan or other countries...it’s happening.

As to whether Kaep has a job or not... Kaep’s commercial was run specifically bc he didn’t have one. It was using the leverage of the fact that he didn’t and knowing he likely wouldn’t against people who don’t want him to. And since then, Nike’s stock has climbed significantly higher than it was at that time, Kaep settled his collusion lawsuit and Kaep appears to have Nike completely under his thumb still.

I’m on board with having opinions and sticking to them if they knock sports out of your life. But sports and athletes have consistently gone on without individual fans. And will into the foreseeable future, on the strength of the advice of some of the smartest and most powerful people in America pulling the strings.

I think any fan who believes that their boycott of the NFL is going to cause some desired change is deluding themselves. But, if the actions of some players or the league reduces your enjoyment...then I guess it makes sense.

100% agree.

The cancel culture has proliferated wildly into social media and I saw a lot of it after Kaepernick. It’s the most recent example I thought of pre- Morey, but people seem convinced these days that if they dislike something everyone else has to and it has to destroy the business or person at hand.

I dun I what thr staying power of this issue will be but the Nets are gonna have shit to deal with all year.

Had a good chunk of protectors at the game today. And they've got Kyrie, who is liable to pop off about the subject at the mosy random moment.

Kyrie already made some bizarre "inner peace" non-response to it. I'll set the over/under at two weeks before he says something else about it.

It's New York so I have to imagine there is some type of Hong Kong specific news org there and someone with press credentials who will stay on the owners ass all season.

I think the NBA is more interesting than it has been in awhile. It’s a bummer we aren’t in the hunt anymore, but watching this Cavs team is a blast.

The media in NY is going to chew Irving up and spit him out. His behavior is so toxic, strange, and erratic that it will destroy the Nets just like it did in Boston.

I caught the game last night and I'm falling in love with this team. TT plays exactly like Varejao, Nance and Love are spacing. Collin is playing at a near all-star level and Garland/Porter are oozing potential

My passion is reignited :)

The NBA has been more interesting in the first week than it has in the last three seasons combined. Fights breaking out, Warriors sucking, at least seven legitimate contenders, talent all over the league, exciting young players - it’s been awesome.
