I know this is schtick, but where do people think Jeter actually ranks all-time among position players? Top 50, top 100?
Longevity is what separates great players from hall of famers. For what it's worth, he is ranked 47th among position players in career fWAR. There's a volume aspect to that since he played so many years, but part of his resume is certainly his longevity.
I said that it adds to his resume, but it's also nuanced. I'd certainly value a player with the best 5-year peak as opposed to a guy who played longer and accumulated more stats.Longevity is what separates great players from hall of famers.
Let's also not forget his post-playing career, and the outstanding job he has done as Marlins owner in restocking the Yankees roster. The greatest living athlete in addition to the greatest baseball player of all time will be inducted into the Hall of Fame today.
Yay!

Ex. Scott Rolen is criminally underrated and should be in the Hall of Fame. He was incredible 97-04, but was plagued by injuries until his retirement in 2012.
This is my way of saying I think Scott Rolen was better than Jeter. However, taking longevity into consideration, I'd put them even.
Damn. Has anyone ever played the field better? His resume off the field is arguably better than on.
