Destiny

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just a shame that they're finally finishing the game but you have to pay an extra forty bucks to get it. I definitely won't be paying that.
Yeah, it makes it an incredibly expensive game with all of the expansions. I play it enough that it's worth the price to me, but I definitely understand why so many people stopped playing.

I mean, I wouldn't have had a problem with paying for expansions if the game had felt finished to begin with, but it only had about five or six hours of actual content that you just had to play over and over and over again. It was pretty clear that the first two expansions, and probably parts of the third one, were just cut out of the game to sell later, which is pretty par for the course at Activision.

Take Witcher 3 as an opposing example. I have absolutely no problem with paying for the two upcoming expansions for that game because the base game felt like a finished product. Yeah, there were bugs, as is expected in a vast open world game. But the game shipped with over a hundred hours of content on day one, basically all of it significantly better written and acted than Destiny's content. I didn't feel increasingly ripped off the more I played it like I did with Destiny.

And I'm not saying a game has to have 100+ hours of gameplay to be a good value. Team Fortress 2 only shipped with six maps for twenty bucks and I thought that was a fine value because Valve promised free updates, which they continue to deliver on seven years later (although most of the content they give out now is made by players...still, new maps are always free). Or take Dishonered. I beat that game in roughly twenty to twenty-five hours, but I never felt ripped off and I was fine with paying for additional story content (especially since it felt like it was developed after the base game was completed). There are numerous examples like that.

I just took particular offense to Destiny because it was very clear that the game was gutted pre-release and sold to players piecemeal, and I refuse to endorse a practice like that. I just wish more gamers would take that kind of stand so companies would stop pulling this shit.

Bumping this thread to discuss The Taken King. I know a solid amount of people on this board play Destiny.

I didn't get a lot of time with the expansion yesterday because of parent open house, but it felt like the game lived and breathed as intended from Day 1. There were cinematics that got me invested in characters, plot development, an overall sense of threat and danger, and finally some development of a 'bad guy' that we don't go kill just 'cause.

Setting leveling to only be experienced base was a good step in the right direction, although leveling goes super quick. I'm almost level 39 already and I played for two hours maximum. Bounties shoot you up really quick.

The expansion built in a catchup mechanism for anyone who has played and quit in the past, or people just starting the game. You get an item that takes you up to level 25, the starting level for new content, and you get to dive right in.

The new zone is pretty cool. Invading an enemy spaceship to establish a forward base is a nice little line. I'm looking forward to unlocking patrol mode there so I can explore.

Adding 'quests' to the game makes it feel more like the MMO brand of game they were going for. Giving a player multiple steps to complete, information to learn, and plot to develop really helps with immersion thus far, IMO.

Overall, it feels like Bungie has done a much better job branching off content into different directions, but the game still is definitely designed for a casual player. The people playing Destiny 4+ hours a day are going to be whining about 'lack of new content' in no more than two weeks, and the game still isn't for those who don't enjoy things like raids that simply run off a weekly reset.

The game feels more optimized toward what it originally planned to be.

Bungie has a strange way of doing things. Usually beta-testing a game for a year doesn't cost sixty bucks, and Steam Early Access games are generally cheaper than buying the game at launch. :chuckle:

They made a smart decision not releasing this on PC. It would have been torn to pieces by the master race.

I really like the expansion. Like you, i was level 40 pretty much immediately on both of my characters because i saved bounties and had 16 ready to turn in. The light level will be the real challenge. Played through most of the new story last night and thought it was really really well done. Did some of the "old" strikes that were in the Taken strike playlist to discover that they're actually new as well, and was really pleasantly surprised by that. I do play destiny usually 3-4 hours/day and I'm happy with the content that they gave in the expansion (obviously i would've taken more, but thought that what was there was really high quality).

I REALLY liked the story missions and the new strike- it honestly felt like a miniraid (raids have always been my favorite parts). Loved the music for the new content, loved the new enemies, really love the new subclasses and getting to see more story on each character type (warlock, hunter, titan- they were all pretty cool. titans got the shaft in terms of story, but the new subclass is really powerful finally).

As for the dislikes- I hate the fact that almost all of the weapons i acquired over the past year are now obsolete. If i want to buy a year two version of the gun I already have, i have to get so many legendary marks (which are no longer "limited", but are actually way less readily available than previously because you can only do daily missions once per account for rewards rather than once/character- so it's useless having multiple characters, and legendary marks are shared between characters). Within the first mission, I got a green gun which did more attack than my fully upgraded gally/icebreaker. I do hate that people who didn't buy TTK can no longer play the weekly strikes/nightfall and most of the PvP and strike playlists. Even though I bought TTK, I do think that others who didn't want to buy it should be able to play the nightfall/weekly strikes.

Overall, I think this is a really great step forward. Just from the new content, I feel like I know so much more of the story than from the base game and both previous DLC's. Really makes me wish that they had done it this way from the start, but better late than never. Excited to grind for loot tonight.... LOL

Lost interest in this shit game after my 40th raid and still needed 2 gear pieces to max. After that it began to collect dust. I never played a game that developers want to literally waste hours of your life and scam the shit out of you.

Didn't even think about buying the new content.

The Taken King stuff is great. I feel like I'm playing a whole new game. I love that they fixed what @Real Deal stated and you have a realistic chance of a good loot drop. The Court of Oryx is more fun than the whole Crota raid and I did it pre-quest so I didn't even get the rewards.

This really does feel like a new game. Loving it so far.
284 light atm, anyone want to do the raid this weekend? Should be 290+ by tonight after I get home and farm.
Sidenote, just incase some of you are unaware, there are quite a few missions you can farm for exotics with the three of coin right now. Just search on youtube and reddit.
Not sure how long this will last.
The loot cave lasted a week or 2 so who knows.

My madden season is pretty much over, so I need a game to go with 2k.

Is it worth it guys or am I too far behind? Keep in mind I was about 6 months behind on the original destiny.

Definitely worth it. I skipped an entire expansion and jumped right in no problem.

Game is fantastic. Say what you want about its first year, but if you're missing out on year 2 because of that then you're really missing out.

I think the big difference is that, unlike last year, the games Destiny is competing with aren't shit. I looked at a list of the best games of 2014 and it was goddamn depressing. Looking at the list, I'm struggling to even pick a game of the year. If you discount GTAV since it was technically a 2013 game that was re-released in 2014 (and 2015 for PC), the pickings are pretty slim.

Shadow of Mordor was good, but I never finished it. Destiny was fun for about two weeks before you realized there was no more content and you'd be playing the same three strikes a million times. Stick of Truth is definitely one of the top games of last year for me, but it wasn't exactly ground-breaking, just fun and funny. Inquisition ultimately turned out to be too much busy work and not enough meat for my tastes after a promising start.

Of the games I played, I'd probably narrow it down between The Wolf Among Us and Wolfenstein. Both really good games, but not exactly what you'd call a peak year in gaming.

This year has already seen two games released that are better by far than anything released last year: The Witcher 3 and Metal Gear Solid V. Both of those games would have run away with game of the year in 2014, and Fallout 4 isn't even out yet. I've also got high hopes for the Tomb Raider sequel. Oh, and those who have played enough of it would probably put Bloodborne in the conversation too, but I wasn't one of them.

The bottom line, of course, is that there are much better games to choose from this year, and I just find it hard to believe that Destiny has improved to the extent that it's worth taking my time over Metal Gear Solid V or even Mad Max. SOMA has been getting great reviews too, and that just came out yesterday.

Depends what types of games you like. Witcher 3 is an obvious recommendation if you like big, epic RPGs, and you can understand what's going on without having played the previous games (might want to read some of the in-game character profiles at times, but other than that). Metal Gear Solid V is incredible as well if you like tactical stealth action games. If you haven't played the previous games the story will make no sense, but once you get passed the prologue the story mostly takes a backseat to open world gameplay where you can pretty much do as you please.

But again, I have no idea what types of games you enjoy. There are a lot of options this year.

I remember we played a little together. Can I skip last year's DLC and just play Taken King without missing any leveling or significant events? Can I even buy it by itself?

I've completely hit the destiny wall. Literally the only two ways I can improve my character (305/306) is the raid one time a week, or getting lucky enough to get a 3 of coins to drop an engram that's 310 in a slot I need a 310 for infusion purposes.

Love the expansion for the most part. Few complaints though. With the old system, you could get your exotic, and it would be a max level exotic, now it can be anywhere from 280 to 310. The consistency is just not there.

In the old system, when you got a raid weapon/armour, you never had to worry about it being under leveled. Now, it can be from 300-310. So instead of relying on rng to give you a good gun, you also have to rely on getting good rolls on the gun, and a good attack rating. It's 3x the rng.

You get that awesome raid scout rifle, but it has triple tap, and you wanted firefly, or it's a 302, because why not.

The other thing is basically the content just isn't there now. Yeah there's technically more stuff to do, but strike playlist is the same handful of strikes over and over and over, crucible is the same half a dozen maps again and again, the old raids are completely useless, and so is the prison of Elders. They really should add a rotating nightfall like raid/prison playlist with it's own exclusive exotics/armour.

The grind is back in TTK, and it's better than ever. Grind hadium to get your sword, get kills with the sword, now go grind 365 (in my case) helium coils to get the 10 special ones. Now wait until Wednesday, not do this strike. Want to unlock the special crucible bounties, go play every game mode a dozen times, something like 44 wins minimum? Who thought that was a good plan lol.

Why can't they just let us play the game, and not force us to do stuff we don't want to.
