Dion Waiters

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Waiters played in 25 of Miami’s final 41 games, averaging 18.4 points, 4.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds. He shot 46.7 percent from the field and 44.5 on 3 pointers.

“Dion can create off the dribble and create space and get to areas of the court when you can get up shots in late clock situations,” Riley said. “He’s going to become a better finisher, higher percentage as a finisher because he goes to the rack all the time. I think he gets into the paint 12 to 14 times per game and he’s kicking and everything.

“Dion has this affable defiance. … you got to have that in a guy that wants to win games and take big shots.”
Over the final 41 games of the season, Waiters played in 25 games, averaging 18.4 points, 4.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game. Most notably, he converted at a 46.7 percent clip from the field, 44.5 percent from three and was a +138 overall while on the court. During these games, the Heat notched a 21-4 record.

But it was also the games Waiters missed through injury where his value to the team was just as apparent. During the 16 games Waiters missed in the second half of the season, the Heat posted a 9-7 record. Considering the Heat missed out on the playoffs to the eighth placed Chicago Bulls due to their 2-1 season tiebreaker, one can easily argue that Waiters’ absence cost the Heat a playoff berth.

No way would I ever want this guy in a Cavs uniform again.

I have zero faith he would ever fit in on a team where he's not the first or second option. He wants to be the go-to guy, and sulks if he isn't. He loves Miami because he led the team with 17.3 FGA/per 36

The problem is that if he's your first or second option, you're not even making the finals. On this team, he'd be the 4th option at best, and would be coming off the bench.

That's a recipe for disaster.

A team with Dion as the first option isn't going to the playoffs let alone the finals.

Not losing or missing out on anything by not having him on the roster.

Well, the Heat almost made it, though technically Dion was the second option because Dragic actually took more shots -- Dion just had a higher FGA/36.

But the overall point is inarguable. Dion's inflated opinion of himself and immature demand for "respect" means that he is unwilling to accept the kind of role he'd have to play on a competitive team.

Except Dion has matured and was a key part towards Miami's playoff run. Miami ad a clear drop off in play once Dion was hurt. It is more likely they would of made the playoffs otherwise.

Dion still has aspect of his game that will improve and he has shown he can play the team game and contribute to a playoff team run as he did with OKC.

So happy for the kid. Its been rocky, but he's gotten his payday.

Ill never forget that rookie year game vs the Clippers. He made 7 3s, scored like 28 pts, and was smiling from ear to ear. He & Ky looked so happy together. I thought we for sure found a dynamic duo.

Was sad to see him move on, but it seems he has grown from it. Cant wait for the "Im Coming Home" article in 2021 when Dion comes back to CLE for unfinished business.

All of these guys are ridiculously overpaid-- but I'm sorry, Waiters (based on how he played) should be a 17m a year guy at the very least...

He's gotten a couple interesting contracts the last couple summers

The tricky part of Developing a player is some take longer than others.

some also have to neglect parts of their game to work on other things.

looking forward to a strong season from Dion. regardless of where he plays. he is one of ours.

Still Dion served as a key piece for us adding depth to the roster

of course some folks will still be rooting for Dion to fall on his face

Really happy he got paid. Worked hard last season. Pat Riley and the heat are a good situation for him

I still don't get the Dion love. Is it just because we (over)drafted him? He's the definition of a chucker... Career 41% shooter, career below-average 3pt shooter (though he did have a nice year this year from deep), career sub70% FT shooter. He's mediocre defensively, has shown an inability to accept his role, and a propensity to take dumb contested shots.

Miami can have him.

He grew up in a shitty situation, litrke brother got killed by a gang last year. It's good to see anyone make it.. Hes had it rough, works hard and looked like he was going to be out of the league last year without making anything

I forgot about his brother, but I did know he had a tough life. I agree on a personal standpoint... I just don't love the guy as a basketball player.
