I think the issue is. We can see what he can do occasionally. It was game 2 or 3 against the Knicks a couple years ago and he had 12 assists and we stomped them.

He can do it sometimes, but he can't seem to do it at will. That's the issue. If it was Allen, I wouldn't complain because it just isn't his game. When you see it, but he can't summon it, it seems like he is just clueless.
Ask yourself this...

Game 7... One player of the core 4 is available... Who are you taking ???

98 out of 100 will take Donovan just cause he can form into superstar mode...

You'll have a person or 2 suggest Evan or another cause they value other things and believe they invented basketball... But the majority are taking Donovan...

Now the whole "he can do it sometimes" lends to he is not the guy...

Donovan will make over 1/2 B in his career - guaranteed.

Kenny has zero leverage.

Mitchell needs to be more selfless. Koby can surround him with all of the talent in the world but Mitchell thinks he needs to do it on his own in crunch time. A big reason why Cleveland won the Detroit series last season was that several guys stepped up at key moments, including Mobley's heroics in Game 5, erasing a dig deficit in the closing minutes, which spurred the comeback
It’s something it feels like he’s figuring out. He’s a thoughtful dude, clearly respects Harden and likes Mobley and Allen and Tyson…it feels like the Knicks found such a nice balance in periodically testing when Brunson hero mode is happening / effective and then switching up if it isn’t.

It's not about what he says, it's about what he does and he is almost 30. You would think he would have realized by now that 9 times out 10, one player cannot personally deliver a championship. Some of the NBA greats are champions not because of what they did, but also because of they relied on their co-stars

He was drafted two years after KAT, no? It can take a long time.

It just feels like he's been in enough postseasons to understand that he can't do it by himself when the lights turn brightest
Yeah, it's a full 80 or so games with a losing record. Each series / opponent is different and the Toronto / Detroit defenses were really tilted to him in some new ways. I think he understands it but hasn't been able to execute to it enough to win 2 playoff series until last year, so you'd have to think there was some new recent learning.

But we won't know until May. I do think Harden should be a smart and useful resource to him for that as the most experienced and maybe best PG he's played with? I'm hopeful that a dude like James who has seen every scheme and counter may be useful

Isn't it the same story with Harden? A lot of his postseason failures have been because he has tried to do it all himself but is too burnt out from the regular season grind to be an efficient postseason player

Yup. The contender hypothesis is that these guys pool their failures and lessons enough to find a way to a solution: trial and error with a lot of prior error, although they seemed to solve it enough to get to slight advance last year.

Stranger things have happened: I’d put it at about 40/60 that they figure it out well enough to have a good playoff run once they get there.

I don't necessarily think his issue is the big moments...it's that he plays in a non-championship way for 3 quarters or whatever and settles for 3s and poor shots instead of playmaking. Yeah...you're down by 2 points... probably best to roll with Mitchell. But it's second quarter, the game is tied and then 8 shots in a row from Mitchell is the problem.

Agree with this. I think during those second quarters having Harden’s methodical push for at least a decent look every single time down over and over again is so useful. Hopefully some of it rubs off on Don bc those 8 shots in a row can be haymakers for either side

I actually agree that he's you main dude. But he doesn't look at the other guys on his team as weapons HE can use to punish the defense.

He is the one letting defenses off the hook because he tries to do it himself.

We saw this with Evan in a couple of games too. When he was playmaking AND scoring he was unstoppable. When he was trying to score they could stop him.

He has the vision and he has the ability to pass the ball. So many possessions that should have been assists were turnovers because he put his head down.

I honestly felt the same way about Harden at times when he was just dribbling. However with Mitchell it is so obvious he isn't going to pass, how can the defense be confused?

Also there are already rumblings that Evan thinks Donovan doesn't know when to pass the ball. The amount of times we see either big seal their men with no incoming pass only strengthens that assertion
