I thought that creating a thread that would allow us to talk about everything post draft related would be a good thing.
who do you think is going to bust, or succeed? who's going to prove to be a steal? Who's going to look better than expected in some areas, but worse in others?
So to start the covnersation, I think Okongwu is going to look better offensively than defensively. I don't think he is that good defensively at the NBA level.
- I don't think he is a strong post defender. Gives up position, can get pushed around around by stronger big man. Doesn't have the elite length to contest that well.
- I think he has some weaknesses defending the PnR. Isn't quick to recover, not the best as far as positional awareness is concerned. Good, but not an elite defender on the perimeter(still a + of his, but not something that will set him apart).
-On the defensive boards can get pushed around by bigger guys for position. Still fights hard, but may not be enough until he gets stronger.
Offensively he has some stuff going for him.
+elite touch from close range. May not have a full arsenal of moves, but does have the ability to score with either hand and has some quick counter moves as well.
+quick leaper from the weakside and PnR.
+Relentless offensive rebounder. Good timing, positioning and willingness to rebound.
+Some ability to attack off the dribble. I think it will show eventually in the NBA.
+Good rim runner with good hands.
+Good FT shooter. May prove to have a reliable mid range in time.
To me Okongwu is more John Collins than Bam Adebayo. Adebayo was stronger and more explosive. Wider shoulders and had stronger core.
Not sure I LOVE this selection by the Hawks when you consider their log jam at C.
