E3 2015

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
God, Nintendo just...does nothing for me anymore. At all.

Amazing since I grew up a Ninty fanboy.

God, Nintendo just...does nothing for me anymore. At all.

Amazing since I grew up a Ninty fanboy.

They're basically just the fun, family option these days.

They're relying on people who either: (A) still love the franchises from their youth and want to keep playing them, (B) have kids that they want to introduce to their franchises (either the current versions or the retro games on virtual console), or (C) aren't really gamers themselves, but have kids that want to game with their friends and want a family friendly option.

They don't really cater to the hardcore gamer anymore that has moved on to the stuff Microsoft and Sony promote.

Much like you, I had moved on from them for awhile, but now I've swung totally back to them. I'll readily admit that most of their stuff doesn't do a lot for me, but I'm really excited for Mario Maker and the possibilities it allows, and Star Fox Zero looks fun even if it continues to just be a re-imagining/evoloution of the original game. Yoshi's Wooly World even looks amazingly cute and looks like the true next step from the original SNES game.

Anyone in the Gears beta yet?

I got a pre-download code and then a few minutes later got a full access code. Can I just enter the full access code or do I need to enter both (the pre-download first) ?

I fell asleep during that Nintendo conference. It was noon... They should have marketed it as a sleep aid, bet more people would have watched. I wasn't even turned off by the puppets, it just was an overall dull conference with nothing for me.

Chris, I agree Fallout looks awesome, absolutely best of show. To me these games just look so samey at this point. Maybe I am in a cynical phase, but this one is running deep. The only other time i've been like this was when I messed up my knee and video games basically became my life.

Really, really exciting stuff here. The sheer amount of classic Mario platforming content were about to get is mind-boggling.

Nintendo Wants to Protect Your Creations

Players can download, play, and even alter stages made by other players. But you can't re-upload those altered stages to Super Mario Maker's online servers. Nintendo wants cultivate creativity, but they don't want you to outright steal.

You Can Only Upload 10 Stages… to Start

Yup, you read that right. You can only share 10 stages on Super Mario Maker's online servers, but you can earn the ability to upload more. If players recommend your levels, you can share more. How much more? “It’s a large number, but we’re not sharing that just yet," a representative for Nintendo said.

100 Mario Challenge

Nintendo wouldn't tell us too much about this, but… 100 Mario challenge is an area of the game where you can play randomly selected levels from people all around the world. We're uncertain if the 100 is tied to the number of stages you have to clear or a pool of lives, if that's even a factor at all.

How You'll Find the Best Mario Levels
Super Mario Maker is not just about creating levels but playing lots of stages that are constantly being added everyday. We were shown a build of the game that was logged into an online server. We downloaded several stages, and Nintendo showed us how users can follow creators and receive updates whenever these makers share new levels. You can also search through a list of featured stages (curated by Nintendo) or levels sorted by popularity. Additional filters can sort by global, regional, weekly, or all-time.

Stars are the social currency that drives the visibility of a stage. The more people that give your level a star, the more visible your level becomes and the more medals you’re going to get. Medals are described as simple milestones or badges of honor that show off how much the community likes your stages.

Stage Difficulty Isn't Assigned By the Creator

A maker is only responsible for creating a stage; the difficulty category for it is assigned dynamically depending on how many players complete it. You can tap on a level to see stats that determine how difficult a stage can be. In one example, the stage we examined was cleared 12 times out of 192 attempts, which is a 6% completion rate, so it falls into the hard difficulty category. Conversely, if 100% of players finish it, it’s going to be assigned an easy rating. Levels can be filtered by difficulty.

Behold, the Power of the Mystery Mushroom!

The Mystery Mushroom is a new power-up that can transform Mario into other characters. During my demo, I was turned into a Goomba the first time I encountered one. The transformation is only cosmetic -- Mario still moves and jumps the same speed and height he normally would -- but a player can unlock more of them with amiibo.

During my demo, I was transformed into Wii Fit Trainer and Kirby, but Nintendo hinted more amiibo support -- Link, Marth, Isabelle, Yoshi, and Luigi were all shown -- in its E3 2015 Digital Event.

Veteran Mario Maker Takashi Tezuka hopes that anyone that uploads a level will have their stage played just once. The sharing tools Nintendo showed us look smart, and we hope the final game can make good on this ambitious goal.

Nier was such an underrated game. Glad to see it getting a sequel.

And I love the idea of Square making Tokyo RPG factory as a studio.. Will be nice to see creative JRPGs coming over to the US.

Also, Star Ocean 5, hooray.

Now Konami, sell the Suikoden franchise to a developer willing to do something with it, and I'll be forever happy.

Games that were shown at E3 that I am probably getting:

Black Ops III
Fallout 4
Halo 5
Gears HD
Rare Replay
Rock Band 4
Mario Tennis
Pokemon: Super Mystery Dungeon

Man, the next gen exclusives at E3 have been so weak for the last two years.

Mario Maker does look pretty great. Whenever I end up picking up a WiiU (hopefully this holiday season), I definitely plan to pick that game up. Hopefully they have a good system in place for downloading other people's creations.

I agree I am pretty pumped about this as well and yeah. A hidden gem is the Wondeful 101 BTW when you get it. Just I hope you do not rage quit easy if you do get that one. Monster Hunter is very good... I am leaving out the big big names because we all know those are good.

Almost too many good games coming out this year. Still playing GTA5, Witcher 3, Dragon Age II (starting to get into this) on Xbone and Pillars of Eternity and Heroes of the Storm on PC. Looking to get Fallout 4, Batman, Just Cause 3, Halo 5, Rainbow Six Siege, Metal Gear Solid 5...fuck, what am I forgetting?

Hopefully I can finish what I'm playing this summer and get ready for Fall, because the goods are coming all year long.

I did notice like almost every great looking game is a current IP and not a new one. Some people find this as bad but it's so hard to make a AAA IP and have it stick, so I understand why devs go back to tried and true franchises. Most of those I Just named are absolutely AAA brand names that have staying power but are still able to say fresh. Most of them, anyways.

I think I'm opting out of Black Ops 3. Meh.
