Early 22 GM Thread! (Trade Ideas here)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
five years later we still havent decided what we have in chang. seriously.
A big part of that was he was blocked by 2 of the top baseball players for a lot of that time.. Also an injury in 2019 and the crappy 2020 season definitely slowed his roll. Before this year Chang had a whopping 38 ML games. Until 2020/2021 we were a legit contender and thus it was/is more difficult to cycle in newcomers unless they are kicking the door down and Chang wasn't. Now that we're a fringe contender, it is time to see what we have to build around or trade away for a legit MLer

I think Chang is here to stay myself and I like it. He turned 26 20 days ago.

If I am GM - I look to lock up extensions with Bieber, JRam and Civale. If successful, FA money should be tight.. If not, maybe I play a little but here, but probably pocket a good chunk while I am at it. I then comb the FA/DFA pile for BP arms and bat first type castoffs.

I then bite the bullet and continue to sort through "our guys" while working the phone to see if we can package up some of our prospects to trade for a controllable big bat, possibly the best value that doesn't play 3rd base as the principle criteria.
Agree with the extensions.. if possible.. and hope that they're for all three..

Figuring out how our current prospects can perform.. is a good idea that I agree with as well.. with one small edit.. as soon as realistic, fair & deserving to all the players for each opportunity.. We want them to succeed..

FA/DFA Pile: will there ever be an off season that doesn't include at least one and possibly two forays into this area of player personel evaluation and selection.... This is where the Indians, & hopefully, the Guardians continue to be very successful at...

If the tea leaves are correct.. I believer you're indicating that JRam would not be part of the trade package for the controllable big bat.. only a package of "some" of our prospects (perhaps Yu as a low cost / ready now player ?)...

The question becomes.. what or who is a "controllable big bat".. @sportscoach seems to believe that would be either Joey Bart or Bryan Reynolds.. with some additional prospects & players to manipulate the forty man roster in favor of keeping more of the Indians vulnerable Rule V prospects...

So.. which would you prefer?.. Joey Bart and three Giants prospects for Not-JRam or Bryan Reynolds and his beautiful play & with the "two step deal.. that doesn't include JRam?...

Thoughts?..

An extended JRam is not a trade candidate, if we don't get that done, I have no idea what they'll (I'd) do. Keep him for now and trade around the deadline if we are out of it I'd guess.

As far as "big bats" go, I honestly have no idea who'd I'd target - but prefer Reynolds at this point.

I guess I'm in the minority on this one, but I am wanting to play "our" guys for now and in 2022 for the most part. Willing to move Plesac, Amed and others including prospects though if the right deal comes up.

Agree with most of this.. especially the extended JRam comment.. At the BTV site.. there is no shortage of people willing to present for discussion having the Guardians trade away JRam & I'm one of them in about a quarter of the suggestions... All of these proposals are for after the 2021 season and all with several interesting players and prospects.... I would add that your comment about extension.. is valid.. Any deal would have to be a result of a declination of an Indians extension...

btw... I have posted a single trade in the entire month of August.. a deal between the Indians & Brewers where the Indians sacrifice Zack Plesac and Tucker Carlson...for Mario Feliciano C projected ETA in MLB in 2022, Antoine Kelly, a 2-pitch fireballing SP candidate who I think would be better suited as a LHRP and Garrett Mitchell a fine young OF candidate that reminds many of Victor Robles, Charlie Blackmon and/or Zac Veen who is expected to be ready in 2022... It's still a deal I like....

Chang has been playing pretty well as of late. Last 30 games hes batting .275 and is on a 30HR and 90RBI pace over 162 games.
Last 30 games: .274, 6 HR, 16 RBI, 3 BB, 22 K, .299 OBP, .595 SLG
Last 15 games: .341, 5 HR, 12 RBI, 3 BB, 10 K, .383 OBP, .864 SLG

The one thing that does still concern me is his lack of walks.

Some advanced metrics:
74th percentile in MLB in Max Exit Velocity
82nd percentile in MLB in Sprint Speed

.278 average against fastballs with xba at .287.
.125 average against breaking balls with xba at .142.
.192 average against off speed pitches with xba at .147.

Would you take a trade of Bart, Jones, Tena, Battenfield and Scott for Reynolds + a prospect?

I made the Plesac move to get Bart so I could swap him for Reynolds... Plus like you said we have our next batch of players, but putting Matos, with Valera, Halpin, then adding White and Arteaga etc as well with them then Auerbach is a guy like a Clement, someone who can play a lot of positions (including catcher).

Getting Bart then moving for Reynolds hurt some of the short term depth, but I felt it increased our team now talent wise plus we got some long term depth pieces (Matos is 19, Arteaga and White are 18)
I know you didn't ask me directly, but I can't help but respond. There is no way in hell I'd trade all of Bart, Jones, Tena, Battenfield and Scott for Reynolds and a prospect. He's just not that f'ing good. Want to know something funny? The stopper in that deal for me is Battenfield, but if I got my hands on Bart I wouldn't let him go either. I think there a better deals for Cleveland out there to be had.

when you start looking at per 162s or per 48s the statement should be - if you were good enough to start, but you're not - he's at best a platoon guy, and prolly a 4A platoon guy at that

I want to see Chang one more season... I think he will be like Urshela and Wendle once they got into the right organizations... Also we do need a Mr. Smile on the team since the original one left lol

Again, as GM my sorting is done, except for one position.

I'm bringing in one bat via trade, and a second via trade or free agency.

My lineup is set, and so is most of my 26 man roster.

I have the prospect capital and a $70 mil budget gives me the money to make it happen.

As GM, I've waited long enough for 26-27-28 yr old prospects to produce...and I've seen enough players that can field but can't hit...can hit ( sort of), but can't field...can't do either...can't hit lefties...can't hit righties...and can't avoid strike outs.

I'm tired of spending more time on three years from now than on the here and now.

I have the wherewithal to put a lineup on the field of real live MLB players.

I understand that some players I DFA and/or some prospects I trade may become productive MLB players, because I know that getting something for nothing isn't the way it usually works.

With Bieber, a very good rotation, an elite closer, and Jose, I'm gonna put a team on the field that can beat Chicago in 2022, and rule the division for the next three years.

ditto

As the GM, I'm analyzing what we need to do to score more runs, and since my target is to win the division, I'm focusing on the White Sox offense.

When I do, I find that the problem is not lack of power. We have hit more home runs and just as many XBHs as Chicago. The difference is almost entirely the ability to get on base.

The difference in team OPS is almost entirely OBP....a 27 point gap. Some of that is due to batting average and some us due to the difference in walks...over 100 less than Chicago.

If our 2022 team OBP is anywhere close to Chicago's, our elite base running will give us the edge.

So my targets aren't power bats as much as they are high OBP guys, even if they are corner OFs. Guys that hit .215 with a .310 OBP aren't at the top of my wish list, even if they bang out 30 HRs.

I'm not going to find a Michael Brantley, but he is the model.

Part of my search was solved by acquiring Straw.
