Early 22 GM Thread! (Trade Ideas here)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Mercado IMO is the only fringe outfielder worth keeping, because he looks like the best platoon candidate. The other three don't even hit opposite handers well.

*********

For those who want to retain Johnson and Harold...and even Zimmer...its time to state which prospects you are willing to leave unprotected in order to do so.

In fact, I'd like to see some 40 man rosters from our resident amateur GMs.

This org can't keep everybody. At least eleven, and probably more, have to go. Right now we have six OFs...Straw, Zimmer, Mercado, Harold, Johnson, and Naylor...on the 40 man. Seven if you add Jones. And fans want to add Valera, Kwan, and Gonzales...and maybe Palacios as an OF. Thats eleven OF candidates. And then some want to put Amed out there.

We are not gonna have 30% of our roster filled with OFs....not even 25%.

Then many of the same fans want to keep Amed, Gimenez, Arias, Miller, Chang, and Clement, while adding Rocchio, Freeman, Palacios, and Tena. Thats eight, without counting Amed and Palacios....twenty combined OFs-MIFs, the entire 20 man used for position players.

This leaves no room for Jose, Bradley, Franmil, and two catchers.

None of this counts the additions expected from outside the org.

On top of all this, very few seem willing to trade anybody who has enough value to bring upgrades to the 2022 team.

But nobody is willing to say how he would make this work....how to fill the 40 man, protect the prospects, and most importantly, have a contending roster with a significantly better offense and defense in 2022.

I did in my original post lol

Fvck it just give LF to Palacios
Palacios is more of a CF'er than a LF'er.. fwiw..

He's fast.. quick and fast.. so is his bat.. That's, perhaps, the # 1 difference between Richie Palacios and Oscar Mercado..Mercado's bat can get long.. but when he's short to the ball.. he can drive it.. Palacios doesn't doesn't drive anything.. or hasn't. He's more of a Miguel Dilone type hitter.. He's whack it all over the yard.. and beat out singles.. or turn singles into doubles.. He puts the bat on the ball.. almost too much, as in, he could be more selective.. For younger guys like him.. easier said than done..

I'd say..defensively.. he can play at any level in one of several spots.. offensively.. if you're looking for the 3 run homer to tie/win the game, look elsewhere..

Thoughts?..

While I want Palacios playing for CLE to open 2022, I'd prefer he be at 2B..
Gimenez (& others) are better defenders at SS than Amed. Put Amed in LF and have better D across the infield.

With Carter H getting the ChiCubs gig, I suspect Palacios will be on a short list of names that Carter looks to somehow acquire (trade or R5)..

Interesting note in the MLBTr afternoon chat..

British scout@ 3:00
Better fit for Santander. Marlins or Cleveland? What can Baltimore reasonably get im return pitching wise? Both teams need outfielders and have pitching.

Steve Adams@ 3:02
They're both plausible fits, but Santander's trade value was a lot higher before he put up a .286 OBP with a 120-point drop in ISO this year. I don't think the return on him would be all that impactful. Couple of mid-tier, 40-FV arms?

So which 40 FV arms would you send to Baltimore for Anthony Santander.. would you want Santander?..

Mace?
Hickman?
Cantillo?
McCarty?
others?

Well it sounds like a deal between the Cubs and the Guardians will be a lot easier to get off cause of him knowing our farm system well so we may see a move between the two teams. I know when/if I switched organizations in OOTP I liked to get prospects/players from my previous organization since I knew them in a sense and they fit how I ran an organization. Cubs are rebuilding so trading a veteran player for prospects make sense...

I think Heyward has a type of no trade clause (but I could be wrong), otherwise Kyle Hendricks (14 million in 22 and 23) Ian Happ (arb in 22 and 23) Contreras (arb in 22) and David Bote (signed through 26 and team options in 25/26)

Would you like any of those guys? @CATS44 as well on this and anyone else who wants to comment... I think Hendricks is out, but Happ, Contreras and Bote have some fits in Cleveland... Bote has played some random OF but not a ton...

Santander isn't someone I would give up any of my top ones for definitely, but if I can get him for a blocked/depth piece, I am so not against it...

the return is defined as 40 FV arms.. IDK who "tops ones" are or what they are..

I was half joking but honestly kind of at this point with what is available and who's knocking why not start getting pushy from within.

Also can you elaborate why you see CF over LF? He has played a hell of a lot more LF over CF in the small sample size of his career. He's never been raved about as a plus defender just a smart, consistent baseball player, his size is fine in comparison to a ton of other players around the league especially knowing he'll fill out more once he becomes a pro with what is afforded to pro ball players.

I don't want Richie at 2B because with the glut of what cometh, he is one of the easier ones to profile for a move into the OF.

I'm fine with Ahmed in LF but at that point I'd almost just rather have Richie getting more reps at Columbus in LF while we give Owen and Yu the Bauers treatment with a shorter leash.

He profiles as a CF over LF on his speed and instincts off of batted balls.. It seems like he moves before the ball makes impact with the bat giving him a CF'er skill set. Once his arm/shoulder are fully healed and he's added some muscle to his frame.. that might change.. but for now..he's ca CF'er.. BTW.. if his only chance to play was in LF.. he'd certainly take that.. but I look at it as what makes a player special and at what spot, defensively, is he most special.. For Palacios, that would be CF..

I think his 2B ability is nice.. perhaps even useful.. but he was getting time there because it makes him useful and the Tribe front office didn't want any load on his healing body..... That usefulness won't be needed at the ML level where there are at least four guys who are ahead of him at that spot..

Thanks for the response..

You know.... Now that it has been brought up (again) Palacios is definitely a darkhorse candidate to break camp with the team. Likely at 2nd, with Gimenez at SS and Amed in LF.

BUT.

Is it time to set Yu Chang free at 2nd? If he sucks, he can retreat to the UTIL/other 1st baseman job.

It's hard to say what to do with Chang, we have a ton of MIF talent and his tape in the first half of 21 was horrific but it was great in the second half... which one is it that we think he is?

Unfortunately for me I'm a Guardians fan and I'm cool with a CFer in LFer if he's mashing doubles all day and running all quick like from 1B to 3B, because for us, he ain't going to be playing in CF and right now our LF options for me personally can kinda get bent. Wish all our prospects the best and hope they can maximize all their value but I'm talking what to do with the Guardians and I'm cool with Richie getting a fair shake in LF with CF taken and 2B congested.

I'll take him sinking or swimming (and bet on) out there over a bunch of the names being thrown out there at this point.

Lets see which players are still around as the 40 man roster gets set in November. That is the 1st hurdle to deal with..

For all we know, Carter H might be a huge fan of Daniel Johnson & Yu Chang... Those guys (or others) might end up with a consistent chance to play on the north side of Chicago...

IMO Daniel Johnson is available to any team that offers the "bag o' balls" in return.

Also I am starting to think Carlos Vargas will be booted off the 40 man as well.
