This.
Earn the minutes.
It also helps if your vets aren't openly tanking/pouting. It's a shame that George Hill, Korvor & JR didn't take a professional approach Sexton's rookie year, but it's also a shame that the organization demanded he get minutes right away. Same with Garland, I'd say the same about Okoro, but by that point the ship had sailed and you needed someone, anyone to put in the effort on defense at the 3 you kind of had to go with it.
Even if the bar is somewhat low, having a vet in the way should make guys realize what they need to work on and help shed some of their bad habits.
Not saying you guys are wrong….I’m old so maybe I’m forgetting some people…but I can’t remember the last lottery pick (and I’m assuming we are talking top five lottery pick) from any organization (well run or not) that didn’t start right away. If I’m wrong feel free to point them out!

Cavs wise, I remember Ramon Sessions staring over Kyrie to start his rookie year. Anthony Bennett too. But those were several years ago.

Bennett probably never should have started ever.

Kyrie played and started in 51 games as a rookie. He never came off the bench. Thompson was a top 5 pick who came off the bench though.

I looked it up again, I stand corrected, must have been in preseason, thanks!

I mean this year even.. Anthony Edwards needed 17 games to work his way into the starting line-up.
A top pick should end up being a starter pretty quickly, no doubt that's why they get drafted so high, but making them go out and earn the spot vs handing them the spot because they were drafted high is the difference.
Marvin Bagley went #2 overall and only started 2 of his 62 games played year 1.
Jaylen Brown went #3 overall and didn't start (save for 3 games due to injuries) until mid-season.
TT went 4th overall as mentioned and didn't start.
