He's referred to as a unicorn because of his freakish combination of size and ability to move. But I'm starting to think what makes him a TRUE unicorn is his combination of elite athleticism + elite intelligence + elite humility/coachability.

We've seen two out of three before, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen all three of these attributes at such a high level in a single player before. I love watching him freakishly move his frame around the court. I love hearing stuff along the lines of how he only needs to be taught a concept once because he absorbs it right away. But I'm even more tickled by how unfull of himself he appears to be. This young man is fucking special.

Tim Duncan had all three

Lebron is an interesting case - you can say he wasn’t coachable but I think coaches had little to offer him

I found the block!

Wild that he blocked a power dunker from behind, off the glass, without fouling and keeps it inbounds.
Mobley is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time at keeping blocks inbounds. Reminds me of Dwight Howard in that respect. He’s all about finishing that defensive possession. Plenty of dudes will do highlight blocks and send them into the rafters but that does no good if they inbound it and hit a shot right after.

Dare I say Hakeem-like?

Very good start to his career. One thing he can really improve on is his post up game and confidence going strong to the basket. I think it will come over the next few years. Still huge room for growth on the offensive end. We still need to get more shooting around the bigs, but that will have to likely wait until next offseason.

Best at keeping in bounds was Alonzo mourning. I hope he gets to that level
You know, Mourning might not be a bad comp for young Evan, in terms of skillset..

Hard to gush too much about this kid........4 games in.....

NBA players who are averaging at least 12 / 8 / 2 / 1.5 in 2021......

Giannis Antetokounmpo
Julius Randle
Karl-Anthony Towns
Evan Mobley
Anthony Davis

That. Is.The. List.

I also dropped all of the thresholds below Evan's numbers of 14 / 8 / 3 / 2......just to illustrate the absolute ridiculous company he is in as a skinny rookie, who will only get better. If you want to drop the rebounding criteria to 7.5.......we get one more name that isn't too bad to add to the list:

Joel Embiid

WE GOT OURSELVES ONE BOYS. :chuckle:

Another litmus test is looking how his numbers stack up across the board......to see if he's just some weird outlier based on team role or if he comparatively does belong in this group. It is very early but I feel like it may be appropriate to overreact thus far. Seeing this much green, when compared to some of the best players in the entire league is........wild. Especially when you consider his skill based stats (EFG, AST, STL, BLK) generally stack up so well. The rebounding will probably only improve as he matures and gets stronger. As was the case in his college profile, he's able to do all of this while staying on the floor (AD like foul rate).

Love this kid.

By the way fellow Cavs fans --- most Sportsbooks are still offering Mobley ROY at +800 to +1200 depending on where you're betting. I hit it before the season and am baffled why the line isn't moving.

The 3 above him are Green (been wildly inconsistent), Cunningham (hasn't even played), and Duarte (who will cool down).
